The Ruhr heights are a ridge north of the lower Ruhr . Like the Ardey Mountains to the south-west, they are to the right of the Ruhr, but, unlike this, not on the extension of the hairline . It is the northern part of the Ruhr Valley natural area in the extreme north of the Rhenish Slate Mountains . The northernmost point of the Ruhr Valley within the Ruhr area between Steele in the north and Überruhr in the south, where the Rhenish Slate Mountains practically disappear to the right of the Ruhr, divides it into a ( Essen ) west wing and an ( Bochum ) east wing.

location

The Ruhr heights run in an east-west direction almost exclusively over the south of Essen and Bochum . Only the northern fringes in the far west are in the urban area of Mülheim ( Ickten and Roßkothen , see Dreihonnschaften ), apart from that, the west wing up to 165 m high (in certain circumstances north of Kettwig and immediately north of Lake Baldeney ) lies completely in the Essen area and the one up to 196 m high ( Stiepel ) east wing except for (Essen-) Horst on Bochumer. To the north, the Ice Age loess areas of the Westenhellweg natural area introduce the Westphalian Bay , to the southeast, beyond the Oelbach , the Stockumer Höhe , up to 177 m high near Stockum in the north and west of Witten, forms a corridor to the 274 m high Ardey Mountains , which, however , is overlaid with a Quaternary layer and is therefore attributed to the Westenhellweg.

The Ruhr Heights lie on the watershed between the Ruhr and the Emscher and offer a view far over the Ruhr area . To the south, behind the Ruhr valley, the southern mountains of the Ruhr valley and further ridges of the Niederbergisch-Märkisch hill country join.

geology

The Ruhr heights from the rocks of the carboniferous formed to include layers of slate , coal and Ruhr sandstone in recurring sequence. They formed as sediments about 290 million years ago in the Namurium , a period of the Upper Carboniferous . Outcrops such as the Klosterbusch quarry or the Bochum Geological Garden show the consequences of the Variscan fold . During the Cretaceous period , the heights formed the southern shore of a tropical sea, the sediments of which, as marls, now cover the carbon dioxide that slopes northwards.

places

The Essen districts of Kettwig , Schuir , Bredeney , Stadtwald , Heisingen , Rellinghausen , Bergerhausen and Horst as well as the Bochum districts of Dahlhausen (and, to the north of it, the south of Höntrop ), Linden , are located on the Ruhr Heights , upstream from the Ruhr, from west to east . the south Weitmars with the Weitmarer wood , Stiepel and the southern cross Petersburg with the Kalwes .

Culture

On the ridge of the Ruhr heights, the Westphalian Hellweg was created a few thousand years ago as a connection from the Lower Rhine to today's Corvey on the Weser . The Neue Isenburg north of Lake Baldeney is one of the most striking castle ruins , while the most famous mansion is Villa Hügel in the west-southwest neighborhood.
