Wang Yaping ( Chinese  王亚平 , Pinyin Wáng Yàpíng ; born January 27, 1980 in Yantai , Shandong Province , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese military pilot and member of the Space Corps of the People's Liberation Army . She is the second Chinese space traveler.

Youth and service in the Air Force

Wang Yaping grew as older of two daughters of a peasant family in the village of Cherry Zhanggezhuang (张格庄村) the greater community Zhanggezhuang (张格庄镇) of the municipality Fushan the prefecture-level city of Yantai on. Like her future astronaut colleague Liu Yang , who joined the VBA on the same day (at the age of 18) and also studied at the Changchun Aviation Academy, she was one of the 7th class of Chinese fighter pilots. In April 1999 the two transferred to the 1st Pilot Academy of the Chinese Air Force in Harbin (中国人民解放军 空军 第一 飞行 学院), where they completed their pilot training in 2001.

Together with Liu Yang, she was assigned to an air transport squadron stationed in Wuhan in the then Guangzhou military district in June 2001 and, among other things, flew relief supplies to Sichuan in May 2008 when a severe earthquake struck Wenchuan County there . At the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in August 2008, she was part of the unit that, by spraying silver iodide, triggered the monsoon rains that are common at this time of year far from the city, thus ensuring good weather for the competitions. Wang Yaping is certified for four types of aircraft and has completed 1,600 accident-free flight hours during her time as a pilot, for which she was awarded the Level II Military Aircraft Pilot . She rose to the position of deputy squadron commander with the rank of major in her unit.

In May 2010, Wang Yaping was recruited as a space trainee and completed a two-year space training program. She was a candidate for the Shenzhou 9 Mission in 2012.

In April 2013, she was selected for the Shenzhou 10 mission , and on June 11, 2013, she launched from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome for the Chinese Tiangong 1 Space Station . On June 20, she held a lesson from space for Chinese students, during which she carried out various physical experiments and thus demonstrated the influence of weightlessness. 330 pupils in Beijing were connected directly via video conference, and the live broadcast was followed on television in more than 80,000 Chinese schools.

Wang Yaping joined the Chinese Communist Party in May 2000 . She was elected to parliament in the elections for the National People's Congress in December 2017 / January 2018 in the constituency of the People's Liberation Army / Armed People's Police (because of the constant transfers, soldiers and armed people's police vote in a separate, nationwide "constituency").
