Waplewo [ vaˈplɛvɔ ] ( German  Waplitz ) is a village in the municipality of Olsztynek , Powiat Olsztyński in Poland. It is located near the towns of Olsztynek ( Hohenstein ) and Nidzica ( Neidenburg) in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

history

The first documentary mention of the place took place in 1384. Waplitz was the center of a parish and belonged to the district of Osterode in East Prussia .

In the course of the Battle of Tannenberg , on August 28, 1914, the battle of Waplitz took place . The fallen from both armies were buried in the Waplitz cemetery of honor .

On the basis of the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population in the Allenstein voting area , to which Waplitz belonged, voted on July 11, 1920 on whether it would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus to Germany) or join Poland. In Waplitz (village and estate), 380 residents voted to remain with East Prussia, Poland did not cast any votes.

In January 1945 the place was conquered by the Soviet army and later became Polish. From 1975 to 1998 the place was part of the Olsztyn Voivodeship .
