The coat of arms of Tokelau , an area dependent on New Zealand , shows a traditional Tuluma , as used by the island's fishermen to transport their catch. A white cross in the middle of tuluma and the motto Tokelau mo te Atua ( tokelauisch for Tokelau for God ) symbolize the close relationship of the inhabitants with Christianity .
The Tokelau Parliament approved the design for a new flag and coat of arms on May 29, 2008 . Prior to 2008, the New Zealand flag and coat of arms were in use.
