Details
Introduced 1971

The coat of arms of Papua New Guinea was adopted in 1971.

description

The coat of arms shows a bird of paradise with the wide fanned tail feathers in a boasting position, which sits on a ceremonial spear of the locals in front of a kundu , an hourglass-shaped wooden drum widely used in New Guinea. Below is the writing " Papua New Guinea ".

An even more stylized representation of the bird of paradise can be found in the flag of Papua New Guinea .

symbolism

The bird of paradise in the middle can be interpreted as a symbol for the unity of the residents. It lends itself to being a national symbol, since apart from New Guinea it can only be found in Northern Australia and the Moluccas . It was introduced by the Germans as a heraldic animal.

The spear and drum are also interpreted as symbols for community. Both play an important role in the rites of the country.
