Warren H. Schmidt

Warren Harry Schmidt (born November 10, 1920 in Detroit , Michigan , † March 24, 2016 in Walnut Creek , California ) was an American organizational researcher and screenwriter . He became known for his articles How to Chose a Leadership Pattern (HBR, 1958) and Management of Differences (HBR, 1960), which he wrote together with Robert Tannenbaum , and for the script for the Oscar- winning film Is It Always Right to Be Right? .

Life

After a Bachelor in Journalism from Wayne State University in Detroit Schmidt moved to the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis , where he became Lutheran pastor ordained was. He then received a PhD in psychology from Washington University .

After completing his studies, Schmidt began teaching and focused on organizational psychology . Until his retirement he taught at the University of California and the University of Southern California . In addition to teaching, he also worked as a consultant and management consultant for large and well-known companies.

Schmidt taught at the Anderson School of Management, where he met Robert Tannenbaum . With this he published two of the most influential articles in the history of the Harvard Business Review .

According to statements by Schmidt's frequent co-author Barbara J. Gallagher, Warren Schmidt sat down in 1969 for his morning writing routine. The result of this morning was a parable that dealt with the torn world of its time, with the counterculture of the 1960s , the women's movement , the civil rights movement and of course the Vietnam War . Schmidt's parable was published in the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Times on November 9, 1969 and caught the nation's interest. Schmidt received approval from across America's political spectrum, from Senator Ted Kennedy to Vice President Spiro Agnew .

Soon various producers tried to get the film rights to the parable. Stephen Bosustow was awarded the contract . Basustow made a short film from the parable with a lecture by Orson Welles . The film won the 1971 Academy Award for Best Short Film Animation . This script opened up a further field of activity for Schmidt and he took on the advice on films that were aimed at training and improving behavior in organizations.
