The Wasenberg is a 48.5 meter high, Ice Age shaped elevation near the village Mötzow in the municipality of Beetzseeheide in the north of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district in Brandenburg .

morphology

The Wasenberg was created during the last, the Vistula cold period . Ice masses advancing from the northeast to Central Europe formed a range of terminal moraine hills between the Havel near Klein Kreutz with the vineyard and the Beetzsee . The Wasenberg belongs to this ridge. The ridge was formed at ice edge  layer 2. On closer inspection, the ridge continues over the valleys of the Beetzsee to the west and the Havel to the southeast. For example, the Black Mountain was formed west of the Beetzsee . Peripheral location 2 of the Brandenburg phase can be traced back to the Schwarzer Berg - Hasselberg - Wasenberg - Weinberg - Götzer Berg line . As a result, a narrow meltwater channel formed around the Wasenberg, in which water was transported to the Beetzseerinne .

Execution site

The Mötzow district, to which the Wasenberg belongs, was owned by the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery since the Middle Ages . Due to its elevated, clearly visible location near the road to Nauen , the cathedral, which is legally independent of Brandenburg, established a high court on the Wasenberg. The gallows and straightening wheel stood here , on which executions were carried out at least from the 16th to the 18th century.

In 2016, an archaeological research or teaching excavation took place on the Wasenberg in cooperation with the European University Viadrina and the Humboldt University in Berlin . It was the third in a series of excavations on various former execution sites in the state of Brandenburg. In addition to finds from the Neolithic , a rider's spur and a crossbow bolt, which were assigned to the High Middle Ages , were secured. Finds possibly connected with the High Court of Justice were possible remains of a pyre and a post pit .

use

The Wasenberg is overgrown with an extensive birch forest. Like the nearby Beetzsee and the Fuchsbruch, it is used by the population for recreational purposes. Traditionally, many Brandenburgers meet on Easter Sunday to roll eggs on the flat slopes of the Wasenberg.

Protected areas

The Wasenberg is in the conservation area Westhavelland and Westhavelland Nature Park . It is also part of the Mittlere Havelniederung SPA area . The FFH area Middle Havel Supplement extends over the southern slope .
