Wasilków is a town in the powiat Białostocki in the Podlaskie Voivodeship , Poland . It is also the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name . The city belongs to the Białystok Metropolitan Region .

Wasilków is located about eight kilometers northeast of Białystok on the Supraśl River .

history

The first traces of settlement in and around Wasilków are up to 3800 BC. Demonstrable. Archaeological sites in the district of Rybniki indicate a flint mine.

In the 11th century the area around Wasilków belonged to the Kievan Rus . Since 1140 the area belonged to the Principality of Volodymyr and then to the Principality of Halych-Volodymyr . The first written mention of the area comes from the year 1358. Siemowit III. , Prince of Mazovia , and Kęstutis , Grand Prince of Lithuania , established the border in this area. The name "Wasilków" was used by Sigismund I in 1524 . On December 8, 1566 Wasilków was from II. Sigismund August the city charter granted, and the right tolls and tariffs to be raised. On December 10th of the same year, King Sigismund II August ordered that a parish be established in Wasilków. A first wooden church was built the following year. The central point of the historic city was the market square with a dimension of 200 × 135 meters. The town hall formed the center of the square. In the middle of the 17th century, 500 people lived in the city.

After the Third Partition of Poland , Wasilków fell to Prussia , and with the Treaty of Tilsit then to Russia. The Russian administration began to transfer ownership of the Uniate Churches in Wasilków to the Russian Orthodox Church . On May 22nd, 1853, a church was consecrated by the Orthodox Bishop Józef Siemaszko at the southeast end of the market square . As a result of the participation of the population of Wasilków in the January uprising , there were reprisals. In 1880 the city had 3800 inhabitants. In a major fire on May 5, 1895, almost half of the city was destroyed. The fire left ten dead.

On September 16, 1939, the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht , in the same month the city was handed over to the Red Army . Many of the residents were then deported to Kazakhstan . After the reoccupation by German troops, a Jewish ghetto for 1250 people was formed in August 1941 . In November 1942, 1,180 people were transported to the Treblinka extermination camp and murdered. Part of the population fought in the Polish Home Army against the German occupiers and, after the war, against the pro-Soviet communist regime. When the war ended, 20% of the city was destroyed.

In 1946 Wasilków had 3849 inhabitants. In 1953, a grotto based on the model of Lourdes was built over a spring. In 1956, the building was damaged by the Polish authorities, which caused displeasure among the population. In 1965 the construction of a dam began, which was completed in 1968.

On May 27, 1990, the first free local election in over 50 years was held.

From 1975 to 1998 Wasilków was part of the Białystok Voivodeship .

The municipality has an area of ​​127.00 km². 40% of the municipal area is used for agriculture, 48% is covered with forest.

Droga krajowa 8 and Droga krajowa 19 and railway line No. 6 Zielonka - Kuźnica Białostocka run through the municipality .
