Waverly S. Austin (born February 18, 1991 in Fredericksburg , Virginia ) is an American - German basketball player . He is under contract with the Iranian club Chemidor Tehran. Austin became a professional player in Germany, the land of his maternal ancestors, after studying in his native country. After a season with the second division and old master USC Heidelberg, Austin played in the Bundesliga basketball with the Eisbären Bremerhaven until 2017 .

Career

Austin moved after high school at the Progressive Christian Academy in Temple Hills ( Maryland ) along the US East Coast to study at the Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth in Florida . At junior college, he played for two years for the Panthers college team in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA). Here he was not only able to qualify for further studies, but also achieved the award of "Player of the Year" at his NJCAA conference as a basketball player with an average double-double in points and rebounds per game. This was then the recommendation for an athletic scholarship at the University of Oregon on the west coast in Eugene (Oregon) , where he played for the college team Ducks in the Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12) of the NCAA . Somewhat surprisingly, coach Dana Altman's ducks were able to win the 2013 Pac-12 tournament in the final against the UCLA Bruins , although apart from EJ Singler no player was considered for a selection of the best players in the conference. In the national NCAA finals tournament , the Ducks failed in the round of 16 Sweet Sixteen at the eventual title winner Cardinals of the University of Louisville . Although various teammates dropped out after the season because of the end of their studies, Austin could not convince coach Altman with his performances afterwards to give him more playing time, so that Austin had rather poor statistics in his senior year as a senior . With Mike Moser , who already graduated from UNLV , instead of the eliminated EJ Singler, the Ducks missed another surprise in the conference semifinals against the eventual title winner UCLA Bruins, for whom Moser had played at the beginning of his studies. Also in the national final tournament they lost this time in the second round against the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin , although they had been in the lead for a long time in this game.

Although his individual achievements and successes at the Ducks were ultimately not convincing, Austin tried his hand at becoming a professional player after completing his studies in 2014 and signed a contract with the German old master USC, given the restrictions on the use of foreign players, favored by his mother's inherited German nationality Heidelberg in the second division ProA . The Kurpfälzer achieved in the ProA 2014/15 in sixth place for the first time the play-offs for promotion, which they had previously missed three consecutive extremely scarce in each case by a victory. In the duel of the old masters, they clearly lost in the first play-off round against the Gießen 46ers , who then won the play-offs and returned to the top division. Waverly Austin, who scored a good eleven points and six rebounds per game for the USC, finally achieved promotion to the top division by changing clubs. The Eisbären from Bremerhaven signed him for the 2015/16 Bundesliga season . In July 2016, his contract was extended to the end of the 2016/17 season.

In the 2017/18 season, Austin initially played for the Czech first division club CEZ Nymburk , and in November 2017 he moved to the French second division Nantes Basket. In summer 2018 he joined the Lithuanian first division club Dzukija Alytus. In December 2018, Austin moved from Lithuania to the Iranian club Chemidor Tehran.
