We Need to Talk About Kevin is a British feature film by director Lynne Ramsay from the year 2011 . The film is based on the novel of the same name by the author Lionel Shriver .

action

Eva Khatchadourian is a travel journalist. Her happy life so far takes an abrupt turn when she becomes a mother for the first time. She cannot develop a relationship with her son Kevin. He is unreactive and cold-hearted towards her and seems to want to destroy everything she loves and cherishes. Finally, the family relationship ends in a cruel act of violence in which Kevin not only kills several students, but also father and sister.

The mother-child relationship is told in a flashback. Eva currently lives without a husband or children in the same small town to which she moved at the urging of Kevin's father. Today she is ostracized by the residents. Smearings on the house and slaps in the face in the street seem to be not uncommon.

criticism

“Without wanting to explain the causes [...], the film, in its subjective approach, emphatically formulates the horror and bewilderment in the face of an act of violence that seems to refuse rational access. Thanks to a strong leading actress and the virtuoso cinematic implementation a captivating and disturbing film. "

We Need to Talk About Kevin is the cruel story of an alienation. An act of violence from film with a furious acting Tilda Swinton. "

"The splendid acting by Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton and the outstanding second half of the film turn a seemingly manageable original story into a strong film that holds its audience in a stranglehold with its surprises and never lets go."

The film won awards for Best Picture at the British Independent Film Awards 2011 and the Evening Standard British Film Awards 2011, as well as best British Film at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards.
