Wehingen is a part of the municipality of Mettlach in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). From 1957 to the end of 1973 Wehingen was an independent municipality.
description
Until about 20 years ago, Wehingen had an agricultural village. Today there are only a few dairy farmers and one horse farm, as many farmers gradually gave up their farms.
history
A first Roman settlement around AD 200 was completely destroyed in 451 by the Hun king Attila . Only around the year 500, when the land around the Saar fell to the Franks, did the village come back to life. The Frankish past of Wehingen is confirmed by the discovery of a tomb.
The place was first mentioned in documents in 1030. Wehingen originally formed with the neighboring Bethingen the community Wehingen-Bethingen . This was split up on January 1, 1957 into the two communities Bethingen and Wehingen. On January 1, 1974, Wehingen was incorporated into the municipality of Mettlach.
Church without walls
Since 1994, the Christian community without walls has settled in Wehingen. In addition to the community center, the community operates a guest house. Many parishioners have settled in Wehingen. As a result, the population of Wehingen has increased significantly in a short period of time, and the influx triggered a real estate and construction boom in the village. The community in Wehingen leads a relatively isolated life.
politics
For the 2004 local elections, the municipality without walls had drawn up its own list for the local council. The Free List Wehingen then held a third of the mandates in the local council. For the local elections in 2009, members of the community ran for the 2008 newly founded party AUF - Party for Work, Environment and Family .
After the local elections on June 7, 2009, the nine seats in the local council are distributed as follows:
The previous deputy mayor Stefan Ollinger (CDU) was elected as the new mayor.
coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on March 9, 1959 and was valid until the municipality was dissolved in 1974.
