Callitris glaucophylla is a conifer art from the kind of callitris ( Callitris ) in the family of cypress plants (Cupressaceae). It is native to much of Australia .

description

Callitris glaucophylla grows as an evergreen , single-stemmed shrub or tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 30 meters and a diameter of almost 1 meter at chest height . The branches go straight or upright, occasionally hanging from the trunk.

The blue-green to gray-green scale leaves are arranged in three whorls , more rarely in four or five whorls on the branches. Young leaves are 7 to 8 millimeters long and older leaves are 1 to 3 millimeters long. The tip of the leaf is pointed and the back of the leaf is not keeled.

The individually standing male cones are elongated-cylindrical to cylindrical in shape with a length of 5 to 10 millimeters and a thickness of 2 to 5 millimeters. The female cones standing individually on the branches have a stalk 0.7 to 0.8 centimeters long and are egg-shaped to flattened spherical with a diameter of 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters. As they ripen, they turn dark brown. Each cone contains six thin cone scales and several seeds. The seeds are released shortly after they ripen and most of the cones then fall from the branches. The chestnut brown seeds are 4 to 5 millimeters in size and have two or three wings.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

Callitris glaucophylla population at the Rocky Hill natural site near Wagga Wagga , New South Wales

The natural range of Callitris glaucophylla covers large parts of mainland Australia, south of the Tropic of Capricorn . Callitris glaucophylla was introduced to Florida and occurs feral in Brevard County , Indian River County , Orange County and Seminole County .

Callitris glaucophylla grows mainly on sandy soils . In some locations the annual precipitation is between 300 and 650 mm. Callitris glaucophylla often grows as a single tree, but also forms extensive forests in some areas, but only rarely pure stands. Mixed stands are formed with various types of eucalyptus ( eucalyptus ). Callitris glaucophylla inhibits the growth of other plant species via a chemical substance that gets into the soil via the roots . Forests with Callitris glaucophylla are found only in the region around Tambo , Dalby and Inglewood in southern Queensland and in the area around Baradine , Narrabri and Cobar in northern New South Wales.

use

Callitris glaucophylla is economically the most important ornamental cypress species due to its abundance and its large distribution area . In New South Wales and Queensland, for example, around 250,000 cubic meters of wood of this type were felled in 2005 . The brittle wood is easy to work with and is mainly used for floors, cladding, carpentry and scaffolding, as well as for the manufacture of posts, poles and beehives. Due to the contained substances such guaiol and Callitrol it has a natural resistance to rot. The wood owes its smell , which is reminiscent of camphor , to the Callitrol .

Systematics

It was first described as Callitris glaucophylla in 1986 by Joy Thompson and Leland Parrish Johnson in Telopea , Volume 2 (6), page 731. A synonym for Callitris glaucophylla Joy Thomps. & LP Johnson is Callitris columellaris var. Campestris Silba and Callitris glauca R.T.Baker & HGSm. The species forms natural hybrids with Callitris preissii .

Some authors assign it to Callitris columellaris .
