history

Weickede was first mentioned in a document from 1282, in which two witnesses are named "de Wekede". The number of farmsteads and the size of the town has remained almost unchanged since the 16th century. In 1666 the St. Sebastian chapel was built, which today is the oldest small church building in the Rüthen area and is a listed building. The local coat of arms from 1992 shows the attributes of the chapel patron and the Pöppelsche.

In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the Electoral Cologne Duchy of Westphalia , came to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt in 1803 and to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815. Later the community Weickede belonged to the Altenrüthen office and in 1937 to the Rüthen office. On January 1, 1975 the community Weickede was incorporated into the city of Rüthen.
