Who takes love seriously? is a comedy and a love story of the director Erich Engel from 1931. In the lead role embodies Max Hansen the petty criminals Max. Before the contemporary backdrop of the global economic crisis , it seems remarkable that the main characters of the comedy live in economically precarious circumstances.

action

The harmless petty criminal Max is actually a person with a big heart. He "earns" his living by kidnapping dogs with his "colleague" Willy and returning them "properly" to their owners for a ransom.

When he was once again followed by the police, he found refuge with Ilse, whom Max passed off as her partner to her room landlady. It doesn't help, he has to serve a small three-day sentence in prison. There he met the dog owner and speculator Bruno, who stayed on his heels even after his release from prison.

Later on, Ilse's room was terminated by the landlady, who found out that Max was actually a criminal wanted by the police. Whether he was a harmless petty criminal or a real gangster, there is no difference. A major part of the further film plot takes place in a beauty competition (contest) in Berlin's Lunapark , which Ilse wins. Max can no longer visit her because his loyal prison colleague Bruno keeps interfering.

The plot of the film ends well when one day Max comes home drunk out of sheer grief for Ilse, but she is already there eagerly waiting for him. The two happily embrace each other and from now on look to a future together.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “This film book is not prudish but without tastelessness, humorous but not cramped, unpretentious but level-conscious. The continuous, only slightly caricaturing direction does justice to it, leads the ensemble with delightful nonchalance, lets it chat in an informal, humorous dialogue. Hansen charming, without antics; the Jugo very much, loosened up. "

"The first feature film by Erich Engel is a comedy based on appropriate milieu studies, pointed dialogues and time-critical parodic allusions."

Others

Who takes love seriously? is - like many other films made shortly before the Nazi era - overshadowed in retrospect by sad and shameful circumstances. For example, the cabaret artist and copywriter Willy Rosen (bourgeois Wilhelm Julius Rosenbaum ) as well as the actor Otto Wallburg perished in concentration camps.
