Vera Fedorovna gases ( Russian Вера Фёдоровна Газе ; born December 17 . Jul / 29. December  1899 greg. In St. Petersburg , † 3. October 1954 in Leningrad ) was a Soviet astronomer .

Life

Gase studied at the University of Petrograd with a degree in 1924. From 1921 she worked in the Astronomy Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Petrograd. There she determined the orbits of minor planets .

In 1926 Gase became an employee of the Pulkowo Observatory . She took part in the gravimetry expedition of the Astronomy Institute (1929) and in the expedition of the Pulkowo Observatory to observe the total solar eclipse on June 19, 1936. Gases research focus was star spectroscopy .

In November 1936 Gase was arrested like many other employees of the Pulkovo Observatory and then also the director Boris Petrovich Gerassimowitsch for participating in the terrorist fascist Trotsky Zinoviev organization. After his release in 1940, Gase worked in the Simejis observatory belonging to the Pulkovo Observatory (part of the Crimean Observatory since 1945 ). In 1940 she discovered changes in the spectrum of the Gamma Cassiopeiae due to the formation of a star mantle. Together with Grigori Abramowitsch Schain , she investigated the molecular spectra of carbon stars .

During the German-Soviet War Gase worked in the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory . Then she returned to Simejis and worked there until her death. In 1949 she took part in the investigation of the diffuse nebulae . She discovered many previously unknown nebulae and identified novel types. Together with Schain, she investigated the structures of the nebulae and determined their masses as well as the distribution of dust and gas . Together with Schain, she created the Diffuse Nebula Atlas, which appeared in 1952.

Gase was buried in the cemetery at the Pulkovo Observatory.

Gase's name is given to the asteroid (2388) Gase , which Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych discovered in 1977 at the Crimean Observatory, and the Venusian crater Gaze .
