Werner Burkart

Werner Burkart (born May 1, 1948 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a former German diplomat who was last ambassador to Slovenia from 2010 to 2013 .

After High School Burkart made from 1967 to 1968 his military service in the Bundeswehr , and then graduated from 1968 to 1975 to study law at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and placed first in 1975, the first and then in 1977 the second state examination from. After studying for a year at the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Paris , he worked for BMW in Munich between 1978 and 1979 .

In 1979 he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his training as an attaché, worked in the Foreign Office in 1981 and then from 1984 to 1987 at the Embassy in Turkey . After a further assignment at the embassy in France , he worked from 1989 to 1994 at the permanent mission to NATO in Brussels and then until 1997 in the Foreign Office. This was followed by a position in the permanent representation of the Western European Union (WEU) in Brussels, before he was ambassador to North Macedonia from 1999 to 2002 .

This was followed by a position as head of division in the Foreign Office and then from 2004 to 2006 as a representative for migration, asylum and visa issues at the Foreign Office. In this role he was also involved in counter-terrorism. After completing a course at the NATO Defense College in Rome , he was Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague .

On September 17, 2010 Werner Burkart became ambassador to Slovenia . He held this ambassadorial post until he retired in 2013 and was then replaced by Anna Elisabeth Prinz .
