Werner Keller (Germanist)

Werner Keller (* 16th January 1930 in Calmbach , Black Forest, † 23. February 2018 in Cologne ) was a German Germanist and literary scholar . Keller was a university professor and honorary president of the Goethe Society .

Life

Werner Keller was professor and director at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the University of Cologne . The main focus of his teaching and research were: literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially the Weimar Classic , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Hölderlin , dramas of naturalism , theory and poetics of modern drama and the history of poetry .

Werner Keller was President of the International Goethe Society in Weimar from 1991 to 1999 . V. Under Keller's presidency, the links between the Goethe Society and the countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Georgia and the Far East were expanded.

Keller died in February 2018, a good month after his 88th birthday, in his apartment in Cologne-Braunsfeld .

Honors

In January 2000, Keller was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon. In 2010 he was awarded the Golden Goethe Medal by the Goethe Society. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .
