Werner Schulz (geologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner Schulz (born August 11, 1932 in Thiensdorf near Elbing ; † December 21, 2018 in Schwerin ) was a German geologist .

Life

Werner Schulz studied geology in Greifswald and Halle (Saale) and worked from 1958 to 1961 as an assistant at the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the University of Halle. In 1961 he was with his dissertation on the Pleistocene between White Elster, Saale and Wethau and its place in the Pleistocene central Germany doctorate . He then worked in Schwerin in the surface mapping of the former three northern districts of Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg and edited sheets and sections of the Quaternary lithofacies map (LKQ).

As an employee of the VEB Geological Research and Exploration (GFE) in Schwerin, the possibilities for an open exchange of information with western countries were only possible to a very limited extent for Werner Schulz at the time. His urge for scientific exchange and his endeavor to expand his knowledge prompted him, despite the existing restrictions, to meet for technical discussions with colleagues from Kiel and Hanover in the GDR. Since his western colleagues were always under surveillance by the State Security , Werner Schulz was targeted by the Stasi and in 1976 was declared an alleged top spy "Quaternary". Werner Schulz was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and released early in 1979 through a general amnesty. Then he was hired again in a subordinate position in Schwerin as an engineer-geologist.

After the political change, Werner Schulz continued his scientific research on the Quaternary of Northern Germany in the newly founded Geological State Office of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He actively campaigned for geotope protection and recorded geotopes worthy of protection , which were published as a map together with explanations. He published the results of his quaternary geological research in numerous specialist articles and was also the author of two specialist books, of which the third edition of his forays into the geology of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was published in 2011 and the geological guide published in 2003 for the North German sediment collector has the status of one Standard work.

Werner Schulz was awarded the Albrecht Penck Medal by the German Quaternary Association in 2002 .

In 2008 he handed over his collection of attachments and fossils to the geological service. In addition to the classic geological state collection, this can be viewed in Sternberg after prior registration .
