Werner Streletz (2006)

Werner Streletz (born March 6, 1949 in Bottrop ) is a German journalist and writer who lives and works in Bochum .

Life

After attending secondary school in Bottrop and doing an apprenticeship and working as a draftsman, Streletz did a journalistic traineeship from 1971 to 1973. From 1979 to 1986 he was arts editor in the Marler Lokalredaktion the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) and, together with Norbert Kuehne organized, a member of a group of authors, readings and literary events in the region. From 1985 to 2013 he was cultural editor at WAZ in Bochum . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Cog . Literary fields of work are poetry , prose , theater , radio play and film . He particularly addressed the Ruhr area . Yet he said of himself: I live here and I work here. But the Ruhr area is only the foil against which my stories are set. I'm not a Ruhrpott poet, not a herald of the area. Writer of the Ruhr area, that is a term that does not fit. (...) I also have no desire to glorify the past of my homeland or euphorically exclaim new times. We're a bunch of pretty upset people - I want to show that.

In 2008 Streletz was awarded the Ruhr Literature Prize of the Ruhr Regional Association. "The price," said Streletz, "was overdue."

In his poems, radio plays and books, Streletz depicts weird and broken types who are reminiscent of the characters of Samuel Beckett or the "heroes of ancient tragedies". This is particularly evident in his last novel Kiosk kaputt . According to Streletz, it is a coincidence that these people live in the Ruhr area. The inner tragedy that clings to many of his characters is again bitter and, in a penetrating way, staid, sometimes even petty criminal. The Marler Zeitung writes about the language of the novel: “Werner Streletz manages the great treasure of the Ruhr area idioms pleasantly and economically; his language is precise, reduced to the essence, cool, almost documentary. ”The critics see him as a“ Ruhrpott poet ”and thus obviously different from the author himself. Streletz also mentioned the WAZ, for which he worked for decades, on the occasion of the Award of the Ruhr Literature Prize 2008 - despite its self-image - the "voice of the region".

In his novel " Return of a Local Reporter " (2016) Streletz draws on the content of his previous professional activity. He worked for a long time in the local editorial office of the WAZ in Marl. "Streletz describes in deliberately undercooled language how his protagonist digs through his memories until they become unbearable for him. Here you can read the chronicle of a slow decay, of values, also of old friendships." "The" local reporter "roams his old town with a different view, not as a breathless, frenzied reporter, but as a brooding doubter and procrastinator." In his interview with the WDR (September 5, 2016) the problems of the reporter in a local editorial office are described very clearly and clearly.
