The West German newspaper was after the end of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, the only daily newspaper that reported extensively about the labor movement in Germany and abroad. In contrast to the view of Marx and Engels, it provided information about Gottfried Kinkel's trial . She supported the German emigrants in London by collecting money. Due to the regulations on the Prussian press law of June 2, 1850, it had to stop its publication.

The newspaper's editorial team claimed that it was the successor to the banned Neue Rheinische Zeitung . As early as May 31, 1849, Karl Marx , Ernst Dronke , Friedrich Engels , Ferdinand Freiligrath , Georg Weerth , Ferdinand Wolff and Wilhelm Wolff declared in the Frankfurter Journal , the Neue Deutsche Zeitung and the Neue kölnische Zeitung that “they share every common ground the little paper appearing in Cologne under the name 'Westdeutsche Zeitung'. ”The reason for this declaration by Marx was certainly that he was the successor organ the Neue Rheinische Zeitung. Political-economic review already planned.

The employees included Christian Joseph Esser, G. Brandhorst, Rudolf Schramm, Sebastian Seiler and Heinrich Bürgers . Hermann Becker was also repeatedly prosecuted under press law, but acquitted.
