Dürrwicknitz is located about seven kilometers southeast of the large district town of Kamenz on the old Via Regia . The village is located on the eastern slope of a brook valley that turns south towards the Jauerbach .

The neighboring towns are Schmeckwitz in the north-east, Höflein in the east, Panschwitz-Kuckau in the south, Miltitz in the south-west and Wendischbaselitz in the north-west.

The townscape is characterized by the typical three-sided courtyards and their arches facing the street.

history

The small alley village was first mentioned in 1225 as Witeniz . The place name is probably derived from the Old Sorbian word vit for "guard" and refers to a guard post on the Via Regia. Since 1600 at the latest, the manor was at St. Marienstern Monastery . During the Thirty Years War , the place was attacked and looted by Swedish troops in 1638.

In 1759 the place is called Wiednitz and to distinguish it from the place of the same name further north-west with the addition "Dürr". This was also retained when the company was later renamed Wicknitz . In 1886 a large part of the town was destroyed by fire and later rebuilt.

Dürrwicknitz was an independent rural community until January 1, 1957, when it was incorporated into Miltitz . Since January 1st 1974 the village belongs to Nebelschütz.

population

In 1925 the place had 79 inhabitants, 78 of them were Catholic. Like the neighboring Miltitz, Dürrwicknitz has been Roman Catholic parish to Crostwitz since ancient times .

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 74 inhabitants in the 1880s; 73 of them were Sorbs (98%) and one German. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 90.3%.

In the last sixty years the population has decreased from 86 (1950) to 50 (2014). Dürrwicknitz is the smallest part of Nebelschütz in terms of population.

tourism

The place has historical wayside crosses, a restored baroque wayside shrine from 1789 (at the crossroads east of the place) and an altar of Mary, which are typical for the Sorbian-Catholic area. The three-sided and four-sided courtyards that have been preserved are also typical .

Dürrwicknitz is located on the East Saxon section of the Jakobsweg and the Krabat cycle path . The place has a guesthouse and a holiday farm with an ADFC bike hostel, pilgrims' hostel and holiday home, creative seminars are also offered here and traditional clay construction is presented, as well as typical old fruit and horticultural care.
