Art thief and forger Neal Caffrey breaks out of prison to prevent his girlfriend Kate from leaving him. When she got to her apartment, she has already disappeared and he is being arrested again. Since his prison sentence was significantly extended by his escape, he proposes a deal to Peter Burke - the FBI agent who arrested him: He is allowed to live in freedom, equipped with an electronic ankle cuff, and in return helps the FBI as a freelance advisor. Adler accuses Neal of being responsible for it and wants to kill him in revenge, but is first shot by Peter, who has located Neal with his ankle cuffs. The relationship between Peter and Neal is tense as Neal is still suspected by Peter of stealing the art treasure. Keller then kills his contact at Interpol, removes his implanted tracking chip and places it in the pocket of another Pink Panther member. This is then identified as a traitor and immediately executed. Neal wants Peter to fill the vacancy, although Mozzie has asked him several times to introduce him to the Panthers.

The Pink Panthers carry out the raid as planned and steal half a billion dollars in cash. Shortly afterwards the FBI is ready and arrests them all. Fearing that they will be betrayed by the police again, Keller and Neal do not wait to be officially released, but rather flee shortly after their arrest. They meet with Mozzie, who managed to siphon about $ 30 million from the Panthers' money before they were arrested. When Keller betrays Neal and Mozzie and wants to claim all the money for himself, Neal pulls a gun and instructs Mozzie to flee with her 20 million. In a scuffle between Neal and Keller, Neal is hit in the chest. Keller wants to flee with his 10 million, but is quickly caught by Peter, who then has to shoot him in self-defense. At the hospital, Peter and Mozzie learn that Neal was shot from a gunshot wound and died. A year later, everyday life has returned and even Mozzie has come to terms with Neal's death. However, Peter does not leave Neal's death in peace. He finally finds out that Neal only faked his death in order to finally be able to live in freedom.
