action

In 2020, heavy rain in the Spanish semi-desert of Almería cleared the mummified body of Axel Collins, a Manchester- born DJ who disappeared in Ibiza twenty years ago. His younger sister Zoe Walker is frustrated when she learns that the murder of Axel Collins is statute barred under Spanish law enforcement and is not being investigated, which is why she wants to investigate the perpetrator herself in Ibiza. Andreu Calafat, a powerful nightclub businessman and patriarch on the island, is concerned to learn that Axel's body has been recovered from his property. He instructs his security chief "Boxer" to find out whether his wife Conchita or his son Oriol were once involved in the murder of Axel. Zoe and Boxer's investigations collide when they appear at the same time as Marcus, Axel's former best friend, to question him.

Axel's former girlfriend, Kika Calafat, returns to Ibiza in the middle of a family dispute and quickly becomes friends with Zoe, who reluctantly teamed up with Boxer to learn more about her brother's death. Zoe interrogates Axel's three old friends and companions from Manchester - Marcus, his ex-wife Anna and the spiritualist David - and takes drastic steps to break their silence. She steals a shipment of cocaine from Marcus, as a result of which he cannot pay his debts to two Romanian drug couriers, they break his leg and give him a short-term ultimatum for repayment.

Meanwhile, Zoe and Boxer get into a police check with the cocaine and flee with Boxer's Golf I convertible . During the resulting chase, Boxer disposed of the cocaine packages, which is why Zoe (only) has to answer to the court for the escape and is not allowed to leave the island until the court hearing. Boxer murders the two Romanians on their cutter and sinks the bodies.

Andreu provokes Oriol and Conchita when he asks Kika to take over the management of the family business. Oriol, who is determined to exonerate himself from the murder charge, tortures the suspicious DJ Cristóbal Martínez with loud music until his eardrums burst, whereupon a feud between the most powerful families in Ibiza breaks out again.

Conchita's attempt to defuse the growing tensions between the Calafat and Martínez families fails. Instead, her husband Andreu suffers from paraplegia in a fictitious road traffic accident. Zoe's father Clint, a retired police officer, arrives in Ibiza and urges her to return to Manchester with him, which she refuses. His interference drives her closer to Boxer, who confesses that he murdered the Romanian drug traffickers to protect them and Marcus.

Zoe struggles with her conscience because, although married, she slept with Boxer. The Calafats unite in the face of Andreu's life-changing injuries, knowing full well that his accident was staged by Pepe Martínez. While Marcus recovers from his broken leg, his love for Anna rekindles.

Marcus, still confronted with his insolvency, lets Zoe in on a dangerous plan to recover more cocaine packets, but the bodies of the Romanian drug traffickers are accidentally washed up during the dive. Zoe buries them in the woods with Boxer's help.

Zoe is confronted with uncomfortable truths when David shows her photos from the night Axel was murdered. Tensions build up between Kika and Oriol as the Calafats discuss the future of their family businesses.

Axel's friends and their relatives gather to remember him at a reunion dinner, but the evening gets out of control because of Marcus. Zoe is furious that Boxer reveals her affair to the other guests, while Marcus continues to be humiliated after a crash with Anna's fiancé George. Clint continues to keep an eye on Zoe from afar.

Zoe's husband and daughter unexpectedly arrive in Ibiza, which is why she debates with Anna whether she should confess her affair with Boxer. Anna's reckless behavior puts Zoe's daughter in danger. David leads a mediation session between the Calafats, and Kika forces Oriol to face his sexual attraction to her mother. Clint follows a lead to Cristóbal Martínez, who uncovered a crucial clue, whereby Oriol comes under suspicion.

Clint kidnaps Oriol to take him to England, where he is supposed to answer for the alleged murder of Axel. Zoe and Boxer team up to prevent him from leaving Ibiza, but events take a tragic turn and Clint dies. Mourning Zoe is furiously determined to take revenge and tortures Boxer with a pressure washer in order to find out the actual circumstances of her brother and father's death in the presence of Anna. The events from the night of Axel's disappearance are shown in flashbacks, giving the relationship between Axel, Marcus and Anna a surprising, dark turn. Zoe's actions set off a chain of events that eventually reveal the truth about Axel's murder. At the end, family members of the two Romanian drug couriers who were killed appear to clarify their disappearance and to demand the outstanding payment of the drugs from Marcus.

Categorization

According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , White Lines is a “genre mix” of “crime, family and hedonism stories” with bizarre elements, electronic music and spectacularly staged parties. For the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the “hybrid series” is partly a “mystery thriller, partly bizarre, partly serious”. The Wiener Zeitung categorized the “robber story” as a wild mix of genres from “thriller to comedy to great drama”, supplemented by a “family saga”. In the opinion of Nick Allen at Roger Ebert , the series begins as the "Enlightenment of a mysterious death" (English "Mystery") and develops into a "Fantasy Adventure" for the main actress. For Martin Schwickert of the Rheinische Post, the series "whisked" lively "family saga, Whodunit plot, romance, action elements and a good deal of lifestyle voyeurism".

review

The website of the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes found a 63% approval rate for the first season with an average rating of 6.57 / 10, based on 16 reviews. Their summary judgment of the critics is: "A tasty, complacent tangle of secrets, White Lines is a sight - even if there is not much to see under the surface".

“Take an island in the Mediterranean, electronic music, a large amount of drugs, a pinch of sex and the recently discovered corpse of a young Briton who apparently disappeared without a trace twenty years ago. These are the ingredients of the British-Spanish series White Lines by House of Money maker Álex Pina. And that is, dead or not, really fun. "

- Theresa Rauffmann : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Excess all along the line: The series from Haus des Geldes showrunner Álex Pina could have been a straightforward Whodunit crime thriller. Instead, White Lines wants to take everything with them, from family drama to a self-discovery narrative to - the title suggests it - drug deals. Unfortunately, the unstructured script and the mostly weak cast do not hold this mix together. [...] Between crystal-clear electronic beats and snow-white coke lines, the series [...] unfortunately finds its real core too seldom: the Whodunit story. "

- Florian Kölsch : Musikexpress

“No savings were made here in terms of equipment and extras. In addition to the visual radiance, the non-linear narrative style, which fluidly intersects with one another from two time levels of anticipations and flashbacks, develops a suction effect with which Pina already bribed in the House of Money . However, the characters and the story of White Lines lack the anarchist drama of the successful work. "

- Martin Schwickert : The time

“Complex characters and a realistic course of action are not the thing for showrunner Álex Pina, but that's also the case with White Lines . The series, on the other hand, does not have to be accused of being bored for a second. The occasional twinkle in the eye of the makers goes surprisingly well with the objective seriousness of the situation (i.e. a murder), with a pinch of soap opera on top. "

- Jennifer Ullrich : Movie pilot
