The Vidå ( German  Wiedau , Frisian : Widuu , Jütisch æ Virå ) is a 69 km long river in the region of Syddanmark in the extreme south of Denmark . The Wiedingharde was named after her.

River course

The Vidå arises around 4 km east of Tønder in the southwest of the kingdom from the union of Arnå and Hvirlå and flows southwest over Tønder towards the Danish- German border, but without touching it, because it mostly between Ubjerg and Rudbøl as well as Aventoft and Rodenäs runs a few hundred, but sometimes only a few meters north of the border and flows westwards. Flowing through the Ruttebüller See , through which the border between the two states runs, it turns to Højer , where it flows west of the city into the 2.4 km long Højer Canal in the North Sea .

With its longest source river, the Arnå, the almost 30 km long Vidå is 69 km long.

River landscape

The Vidå flows through the floodplains, which extend north and south of the Danish-German border and are partly still quite natural. It is important for the drainage of marshes and geest . Several pumping stations are connected to the river. To avoid flooding, it is diked in the low-lying marshland. Because of the long storm phases from the North Sea, which dammed the river because the locks in the sea dike could not be opened, a large area was created as a storage area near Højer. There is a large nature reserve for resting flocks of birds (geese and others).

The painter Emil Nolde was born in the district of Nolde von Burkal near the source and the river landscape of the Vidå remained his home in Seebüll until his death .

Political history

Until the German-Danish War in 1864, the Wiedau was located on the territory of the Duchy of Schleswig , which had been a fiefdom of the Kingdom of Denmark and was ruled by the Danish king as a duke (vassal). With the Treaty of Gastein of 1865, Schleswig became part of Prussia . Since 1867 the Wiedau was within the province of Schleswig-Holstein . After the First World War , there was a referendum in North Schleswig and parts of South Schleswig in 1920 . The result of the vote led to a new definition of the state border between Denmark and Germany. Since then, the lower reaches of the Vidå have been sometimes, but inappropriately, referred to as the border river between the two countries. Until the Danish structural reform in 2007, the river was in Sønderjyllands Amt , the former North Schleswig.
