The Wien Holding Arena (short: WH Arena ) is a planned multi-purpose hall in the Austrian capital Vienna . The designation Wien Holding-Arena is the working title for the future event hall. The building is to be built in the 3rd district of Landstrasse in Neu Marx, the core zone of the Sankt Marx district .

history

The under monument protection standing Wiener Stadthalle 1958 corresponds, despite modernization and adjustments, no longer the cutting edge of technology. There is a lack of space and sufficient audience capacity for large concerts by well-known artists and bands with a large stage structure. So the considerations for a new building began. With the new arena, the aim is to catch up with the largest and most booked arenas, such as the Lanxess Arena in Cologne or the O2 Arena in London .

On January 30, 2019, Mayor Michael Ludwig , City Councilor for Finance and Economics Peter Hanke and the head of Wien Holding , Kurt Gollowitzer, announced that the new large event hall in the Neu Marx district would be built on the former slaughterhouse site. In a location analysis carried out by UIV Urban Innovation Vienna GmbH from November to December 2018 , Neu Marx clearly outperformed nine other possible locations with 268 out of 300 points. The grounds at the Dusika-Hallenstadion (204 points) and the Donaufeld (128 points) took the places behind it . The other locations were Austria Center Vienna , Messe Wien , Donaukanalplatte , Hauptbahnhof , Seestadt Aspern , Oberlaa and Rothneusiedl . The 45,000 m² site is already owned by the city and has also been developed . Wien Holding founded WH Arena Projektentwicklung GmbH to implement the new event hall . The Marx Halle event complex is in the immediate vicinity of the location.

The multi-purpose event arena should offer around 20,000 seats. The architecture competition started in January 2020, the result of which will be known in December 2020. This is followed by the submission planning and the official procedures. The hall should be completed after a construction period of 24 to 36 months. The new arena will replace the city hall as the largest event hall in Vienna. A re- use concept for popular sport and culture is to be developed for them.
