Wilfried Hartmann (historian)

Wilfried Hartmann (born July 26, 1942 in Stuttgart ) is a German medieval historian . His work made him a specialist in the Carolingian era with a focus on council legislation .

Live and act

Wilfried Hartmann studied history, German and political science at the universities of Tübingen and Göttingen from 1961 to 1967 . In 1967 he passed the state examination. Two years later he received his doctorate from Horst Fuhrmann in Tübingen with a thesis on Manegold von Lautenbach . Hartmann worked for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) in Munich from 1971 to 1989 . 1976 followed with the work The Council of Worms 868. Tradition and meaning his habilitation in Salzburg . In 1989 Hartmann taught as a professor for medieval history at the University of Mannheim. From 1991 to 1994 he held the chair for history at the University of Regensburg . Since 1993 he has been a full member of the central management of the MGH. From 1994 until his retirement in 2008 he taught as a professor at the University of Tübingen. His successor on the chair in Tübingen was Steffen Patzold .

His main research interests are the history of the Carolingian era, the history of education in the 11th and 12th centuries, the history of ecclesiastical and secular law, and the historiography of the high and late Middle Ages. Hartmann carried out basic research with his work on the councils in the 9th century. At the same time they established his reputation as a proven expert on the Carolingian era, canon law and the handwritten early medieval tradition. His dissertation already dealt with the Worms Council of 868. Hartmann prepared an edition of the Carolingian Councils from 843 to 859. He presented research on the diocesan synods (1979) and published a history of the synods of the Carolingian era in the Franconian Empire and in Italy (721– 911) (1989). For the Encyclopedia of German History he published a description of the investiture dispute in 1993 .

Hartmann published the broadcast manual Reginos von Prüm in German translation. A conference was held in the spring of 2000 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Bishopric of Worms . The contributions to the conference were published in December 2000 in an anthology edited by Hartmann. In 2002 he published a biography of the Carolingian ruler Ludwig the German , who had long been neglected in research . It was the first comprehensive monograph on Ludwig the German since Ernst Dümmler's Yearbooks of German History (2nd edition 1887). Hartmann's biography was also the main reason for a conference in Lorsch in October 2002 . The conference proceedings with eleven contributions were published in 2004 under Hartmann's editorship. He presented his decades of research on canon law around 900 in a manual in 2008. Another biography about Charlemagne followed in 2010 . Hartmann set himself the task of “penetrating this myth in order to report on the actual life's work of this Frankish king and emperor.” Hartmann comes to the conclusion that “Karl was in the field of imperial administration, church and educational policy and through Kaisertum created traditions that had an impact far into the European Middle Ages and shaped Europe deep into modern times. ”With his wife, the medieval historian Martina Hartmann , he published a book about Charlemagne in 2014, in which eleven chapters the 101 most important questions about Franconian rulers and his epoch are answered.
