Wilhelm Carl Gustav Ritter von Doderer (born August 16, 1854 in Klosterbruck , † November 1, 1932 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect , engineer and contractor .

Life

After attending the “ Theresianum ” grammar school in Vienna , Wilhelm Carl Gustav von Doderer studied architecture from 1871–76 with his father, Carl Wilhelm Christian von Doderer , at the Vienna Polytechnic ( Vienna University of Technology since 1872 ). During his studies, he met the building contractor Heinrich (from 1875: von) Hügel (1828–1899) through his father , whose Munich- based company "Hügel & Sager" (founded 1869) specialized in railway construction.

After completing his studies, Doderer joined Hügel's company and assisted him with various structures. First with the construction of Huegel's villa in Darmstadt (1878) and the casino in Bad Kissingen (1878–1880). Then later when building various railway lines. His successful work for the company made Doderer the preferred marriage candidate for Hill's third daughter, Louise Wilhelmine (called Willy) von Hügel (1862-1946). After the marriage in 1881, Doderer took over the representation of the company in Austria-Hungary . From 1893 to 1895 he moved with his family to Schleswig-Holstein in order to build one of the longest construction sections of the Kiel Canal (formerly: Kaiser Wilhelm Canal ) on behalf of Hügel & Sager .

His special skills as an engineer and managing director made Wilhelm von Doderer the natural successor to the previous company owners Heinrich von Hügel and Michael Sager when they gradually retired from business life for reasons of age. After adding further business partners, the construction company now traded under the name "Doderer, Göhl & Sager" and in the following decades rose to become one of the largest railway builders in the Danube monarchy.

Doderer worked in a leading position in the construction of the Tauern Railway , the Karawanken Railway , the Mittenwald Railway , the Vienna River Regulation and the Vienna City Railway . For his achievements he was awarded the honorary title of "kk Ober-Baurat". Almost paralyzed by osteoarthritis , Doderer had to give up the management of his company in 1917 and transfer it to his son-in-law August Mayer . In doing so, Doderer passed on his son, Wilhelm (called Immo) von Doderer, as he did not consider him sufficiently capable despite his engineering training.

August Mayer continued the company in Innsbruck ( Tyrol ) with his business partner Karl Innerebner under the name "Innerebner & Mayer". Under this name, it is still active in the construction business there today.

In addition to his work as a building contractor, Doderer was also the main shareholder in the Vienna-based major bank Creditanstalt (fourth largest shareholder ) and Wienerberger Ziegelwerke . While he was a member of the “Audit Committee” at Creditanstalt for years, Doderer sat on Wienerberger's supervisory board from 1911 until his death in 1932 . The von Doderer family was one of the richest in the dual monarchy , with a fortune of around 12 million kroner . However, this was greatly reduced in the course of the First World War by the continuous subscription of Austrian war bonds.

Wilhelm Carl Gustav von Doderer is buried together with his wife Louise Wilhelmine in a family crypt in the Vienna Central Cemetery (grave address: 59D / No. 3). The accompanying grave stele was designed by the architect Max von Ferstel (a brother-in-law of Doderer).

family

Wilhelm von Doderer's parents were the Austrian architect and professor Carl Wilhelm Christian Ritter von Doderer (1825–1900) and Maria von Greisinger (1835–1914), daughter of the professor and mathematician Gustav Adolf von Greisinger (1793–1868). Wilhelm's father was granted hereditary nobility in 1877. While Wilhelm von Doderer was baptized a Catholic, his wife Wilhelmine, like most of the family, belonged to the Protestant minority in Austria-Hungary. Wilhelm and Wilhelmine had six children; the youngest was the later writer Heimito von Doderer :

  • Ilse (married Mayer) (1882–1979)
  • Almuth (married Martinek) (1884–1978)
  • Wilhelm (called Immo) (1886–1975)
  • Helga (married Hauer) (1887–1927)
  • Astri (married Stummer) (1893–1989)
  • Heimito (1896–1966)

Wilhelm Carl von Doderer was also the brother of the Austrian industrialist Richard von Doderer (1876–1955).
