Carl Wilhelm Christian Doderer , since 1877 Ritter von Doderer (born January 2, 1825 in Heilbronn , † May 13, 1900 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

After attending grammar school and high school (classmate of Adolf Cluss ) in Heilbronn, Carl Wilhelm Doderer began an apprenticeship as a mason and mason in 1840. In this context he worked at the Heilbronn Kilianskirche . After completing his apprenticeship, Doderer first went to the Stuttgart Polytechnic , where he passed the royal Württemberg state examination in construction. During his studies he was involved in the planning of the “ Wilhelma ” pleasure palace . In 1849/50 Doderer attended the Berlin Building Academy and the Berlin Art Academy . A longer study trip finally took Doderer to Vienna . There he worked in the studio of Eduard van der Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburg in 1851/52 . Here, among other things, he was involved in the planning of the Vienna Arsenal .

In the autumn of 1852 Doderer was appointed “Professor of Beautiful Architecture” at the Genie Academy (training center for engineering troops or engineering troops) in Klosterbruck ( Znojmo in Moravia ). In this position he carried out numerous military constructions for the Austro-Hungarian Army High Command, among others in Verona and in Wiener Neustadt . In addition, on behalf of the War Ministry, Doderer published recordings and drawings of all Austro-Hungarian military educational institutions, academies, etc. in a large collection. He also wrote an architectural theory of forms with numerous autographs .

In 1866 Doderer took over the "Professorship for Building Construction and Architecture" at the Polytechnic Institute Vienna (from 1872 Technical University Vienna ). There he was dean of the building school from 1870–72 and 1882–84. In 1876 Doderer was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology for the academic year 1876/77. Doderer's retirement took place in 1896.

In addition to his successful teaching activities and as a specialist author, Doderer increasingly worked as an architect for representative state buildings. The most important orders included:

Together with the architect Max von Ferstel , Carl Wilhelm von Doderer also built the prestigious town house of the von Doderer family in Stammgasse 12 in III. Viennese district .

As an architect, Carl Wilhelm von Doderer represented a strict historicism and among other things coined the term “monumental buildings”. His apartment and studio were in house number 9 on Ungargasse .

In addition to his career as an architect and university lecturer, Doderer held numerous other positions. Among other things, Doderer was a member of the Vienna City Council from 1872 to 1874 . In the following year he became a member of the Künstlerhaus Wien . In addition, Doderer was a member of the editorial committee of the “Journal of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects”. Most recently, Doderer was a member of the Patent Court (today: Supreme Patent and Trademark Senate ).

Carl Wilhelm von Doderer succumbed to a stroke on May 13, 1900 and is buried together with his wife Maria in a family crypt in the Vienna Central Cemetery (grave address: 59D / No. 3). The accompanying grave stele was designed by the architect Max von Ferstel.

Honors

Carl Wilhelm von Doderer was awarded the title of " Imperial and Royal Court Councilor ". He was also a member of the Franz Joseph Order . In 1877 he was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown III in recognition of his services by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Excellent class and, due to the statutes of the order, raised to the hereditary Austrian nobility and knighthood on February 4, 1877 as Carl Wilhelm Christian Ritter von Doderer .

Carl Wilhelm von Doderer came from a modest background. His father, Gottlieb Doderer (1782–1836), was a simple carpenter and mill builder in Heilbronn. His mother's name was Bernhardine Luise Dorothea Diruf (1790–1846) and was the daughter of the butcher Georg Ludwig Diruf. Carl Wilhelm's younger brother, Carl Gottlieb Doderer (1826-1893), was a Heilbronn city ​​councilor and in 1888 co-founder of the Württemberg Portland Cement-Werk zu Lauffen am Neckar AG (today ZEAG Energie AG ).

On November 24, 1853, Carl Wilhelm von Doderer married Maria von Greisinger (1835–1914), daughter of the professor and mathematician Gustav Adolf von Greisinger (1793–1868) in Vienna . He had four children with her:

The two sons Wilhelm Carl Gustav and Richard Gottlieb Wilhelm made the von Doderer family with a fortune of around 12 million crowns into one of the richest of the dual monarchy Austria-Hungary in later years as contractors and heavy industrialists . Carl Wilhelm von Doderer also had a very famous grandson in the Austrian writer Heimito von Doderer .
