Wilhelm Hammerschmidt (born May 1, 1859 in Barmen (today a district of Wuppertal ), † July 28, 1924 in Münster ) was a German politician .

Life

Wilhelm Hammerschmidt studied law and was district administrator of the Gelsenkirchen district from 1892 to 1903 . From 1901 to 1903 he was also the founding chairman of the "Association for Combating Common Diseases in the Ruhr Coal Area eV, Gelsenkirchen". In 1903 Hammerschmidt succeeded Ernst Küper as Lord Mayor of Krefeld and in this capacity was also a member of the Prussian mansion from 1903 to 1905 . He was succeeded as Lord Mayor Adalbert Oehler . From 1905 to 1919 he held the office of governor of the Provincial Association of the Province of Westphalia .

Hammerschmidtstrasse in Herne is dedicated to him and his work in the region.
