Wilhelm Damasi Lindanus (also: Willem van der Lindt , actually van der Linden ; * 1525 in Dordrecht , † November 2, 1588 in Gent ) was an inquisitor , bishop and university professor .

Life

Lindanus, the son of Damasus van der Linden, Mayor of Dordrecht , studied philosophy and theology at the University of Leuven . He traveled through France and Germany , including a stop in Paris to improve his Hebrew and Greek. In 1552 he received his licentiate in theology in Leuven and was ordained a priest . In 1554 he accepted a call to the University of Dillingen , where he taught for two years as a professor of Holy Scripture .

In 1556 Lindanus was awarded Dr. theol. PhD . In the same year he was appointed vicar general by the Utrecht bishop Georg von Egmond and chapter dean in The Hague . In addition, he was inquisitor for the county of Holland , the province of Zeeland and the province of Friesland during this time . He went to Friesland, where he earned a reputation as a relentless and strict inquisitor with a high claim to power.

In 1562, King Philip II envisaged Lindanus as bishop for the newly founded diocese of Roermond . The episcopal ordination was made on April 11, 1562 by the Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle . Due to the unrest that resulted from the Inquisition and Counter-Reformation , however, he was only able to move into his diocese on May 11, 1569 and began at the same time with extensive restructuring. He had already participated in various reform efforts, followed in 1570 in Mechelen and in 1573 in Leuven Provincial Synods .

During the turmoil of the Eighty Years' War in 1572 , Lindanus was forced to flee for a short time and after a defeat with the royal governor Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba in 1573. Among other things, he went to Rome to meet Pope Gregory XIII. to convince of his reform ideas. However, he returned to his bishopric without success. In 1584 he went to Rome again, since one of his friends had now become Pope Sixtus V. However, he could not convince him of his reform ideas either. On his return, he was appointed Bishop of Ghent by the Pope on July 2, 1588 .
