Wilhelm Vittali (born May 28, 1859 in Donaueschingen ; † December 20, 1920 in Karlsruhe ) was a German architect . Along with Hermann Billing , with whom he worked for five years in an office community, he is considered one of the most important hotel architects and representatives of Art Nouveau in Baden-Baden , Karlsruhe and southwest Germany.

Life

The "Golden Cross" in Baden-Baden

Vittali attended grammar school in Donaueschingen . After studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris , Vittali got his first job in the general management of the Baden State Railways in Karlsruhe. There he was responsible, among other things, for the construction of the Höllentalbahn stations. From 1890 to 1905 he worked as a freelance architect in Baden-Baden. During this time, more than 50 residential and commercial buildings were built in the city, the most prominent example of which is the “ Golden Cross ” at Lichtentaler Straße 13.

The partnership with the Karlsruhe architect Hermann Billing (1867-1946), which lasted from 1905 to 1910, resulted in numerous buildings, mostly in Art Nouveau style. These include the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and the crematorium at the main cemetery in Baden-Baden . In 1910 Vittali started his own business in Karlsruhe, where he designed numerous sophisticated residential buildings. In 1912 his competition design for the development of the station square received the first prize. The castle hotel on Bahnhofsplatz , built between 1913 and 1914, was implemented .

Vittali had acquired a reputation as a specialist in hotel and sanatorium construction early on. From 1888 to 1920, numerous representative accommodation establishments emerged, especially in southwest Germany and Alsace. They include the Hotel Waldlust in Freudenstadt , the Hotel Royal in Metz , the Fürstenhof in Bad Wildungen , the Hotel Bad Schachen in Lindau , the State Kurhaus in Bad Ems and the Inselhotel in Konstanz .
