The house Wilhelmstrasse 54 is a historic building in Heilbronn , which is a listed building. Before the Second World War, the paper wholesaler of the Jewish Marx family was located there; after the Second World War, the rose pharmacy moved into the building.

location

The building is located on Wilhelmstrasse in Heilbronn, which leads from the former city gate on the street to Flein, the so-called "Fleiner Tor", to Heilbronner Rathenauplatz . The road goes back to a historical main traffic axis to Flein, Lauffen and Stuttgart.

description

The three-storey building in exposed brickwork is structured by three window axes, whereby the central window axis is particularly emphasized. This is done by a central gable and a bay window in the middle of the facade with an overlying balcony on the main floor on the first floor. Fekete further describes the building:

" Elaborate late-historical facade design with manifoldly varied gable and pattern-like floral relief fields on bay windows and crowning windows ."

history

The house was built between 1898 and 1901 according to plans by August Dederer . The building was built by August Dederer's mother, a widow of a building contractor.

In the period before the Second World War, the paper wholesale business of the Jewish entrepreneurs Berthold (1866–1943) and Ludwig Marx (1897–1943) was located in the building. Ludwig Marx also lived in the house with his family. The family included his wife Johanna Marx (1900–1943) and their son Walter Marx (1926–2013). There were also Ludwig Marx's sister Hansi Isaac geb. Marx and her son Werner Isaac as well as the teacher Curt Flamm reported. The Jewish owner family was harassed during the persecution of the Jews in the Third Reich and had to sell the building to the city of Heilbronn in 1939. Senior boss Berthold Marx came to a Jewish retirement home in Herrlingen and was later murdered in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Ludwig and Johanna Marx emigrated to Luxembourg with their son Walter and their nephew Werner, but were deported to camps after the German occupation of the Benelux countries. Only Walter and Werner survived. Hansi Isaac had emigrated to England for a long time because of work.

After the destruction of the office of the commercial health insurance company in Klarastraße, the building served as their alternative accommodation. Later the rose pharmacy , which had also lost its building in the air raids on Heilbronn , moved into the rooms at Wilhelmstrasse 54.

In 1950, the building was still owned by the city of Heilbronn, it was the Rose Pharmacy by Richard Koch, who also lived in the house. Other residents were the engineer Heinz Bode, the widow Frida Hart, the city secretary Willy Helmle and the architect Karl Märklin sen. The heirs of the Jewish previous owners sought a restitution procedure, which was granted in 1950, and then sold the building to Apotheker Koch. In 1961, in addition to the pharmacy and its owner and the widow of the architect Märklin, the crane operator Ludwig Sturm and the fitter Heinz Höllwarth were also registered there. The rose pharmacy is still in the building today.

Art historical significance

The building is an important example of the late historicism style and was therefore listed as a historical monument.
