William Herman Haas also in the spelling variant William H. Haas (born June 20, 1872 in Bellevue , Huron County , Ohio , † November 5, 1960 in Evanston , Cook County , Illinois ) was an American geographer and geologist .

Life

Family and education

Born in the small town of Bellevue in the state of Ohio, William Herman Haas, son of George Haas and Minnie born Hankamer, later turned to studying geography and geology at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Hardin County , after attending public schools at Butler College in Indianapolis , Indiana . 1903 Haas earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Chicago , 1922 took place there his promotion to Ph.D.

William Herman Haas, a member of the United Church of Christ , married Marion Mahon on June 29, 1910, from Ottumwa , Iowa . Haas, who lived on Hinman Avenue in Evanston, died in the late fall of 1960 at the age of 88.

Professional background

After serving as Vice President of the Samuel Mahon Company, William Herman Haas was appointed to the Department of Geography at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1914 ; he was promoted to professor in 1924 and retired in 1949 . In addition, he was employed as a Special Expert for the United States Shipping Board in 1917 and 1918 .

Haas conducted geographic and geological studies in the Mesa Verde National Park . Further studies concerned the glaciation in the state of Ohio as well as special investigations on the Mississippi River . William Herman Haas also made contributions on Native Americans and the geography of Brazil .

Haas was a member of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, the Geographic Society of Chicago, the Ecological Society of America , the Illinois State Academy of Science, and the Association of American Geographers . He was also a member of the Freemasons .
