William Roger Paton (born February 9, 1857 in Old Machar near Aberdeen , † April 21, 1921 in Vathy on Samos ) was a Scottish classical philologist and epigraphist who worked in Greece.

Life

William Roger Paton was the son of John Paton and his wife Eliza Deborah born. Burnett. He attended Eton College and studied Classics at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford , where Oscar Wilde was one of his fellow students. After graduation, Paton went to Greece as a scholarship holder at the British School at Athens and stayed there all his life. In 1885 he married Irini Olympiti on Kalymnos , the daughter of the mayor, through whose inheritance he came to land in Myndos . Paton lived on various Greek islands, including Chios and Lesbos , to enable his sons to attend high school. Paton himself was engaged in archaeological, epigraphic and philological projects. He also made contact with scientists from abroad. The German Archaeological Institute elected him a corresponding member in 1893, the University of Halle awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy in 1900 and in 1908 Paton became a member of the Athenaeum Club in London .

Paton had a long correspondence with the German philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . He supported him in several research projects: for the Inscriptiones Graecae he examined the inscriptions of the Aegean islands of Lesbos and Tenedos , for the new Plutarch edition (together with Kurt Hubert , Wilhelm Nachstädt , Max Pohlenz , Wilhelm Sieveking and Hans Wegehaupt ) he examined several manuscripts and edited two volumes of the Moralia himself . His best known publications include his translations of the Greek anthology and the historian Polybios for the Loeb Classical Library .
