Welcome home is a German television film from 2008. The film drama produced by SWR tells the story of the negative consequences of the German ISAF mission in Afghanistan based on an individual fate .

action

There is joy in the small town of Deidesheim in the Palatinate . The soldier Ben Winter ( Ken Duken ) , who does voluntary military service, returns unscathed from Kunduz after a three-month mission in Afghanistan . At least externally, it has not suffered any damage. However, an assassination attempt in which he had to watch his friend Torben die resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder in him . So that Ben does not spoil the joy of his environment, he tries to cover up the shock. During the debriefings with the Bundeswehr, he denied his problems. When he still shows increasingly violent emotional outbursts, his friend Tine ( Mira Bartuschek ) and the parents react disturbed. Only neighbor Lona ( Ulrike Folkerts ) recognizes as a doctor that Ben needs help.

criticism

“A (TV) drama that strives for realism, which deals with the overwhelming demands of a young soldier as well as with that of his home environment, but remains largely implausible with a few exceptions. The attempt to reconcile entertainment with a certain claim only partially succeeds. "

"With an excellent cast crew - especially Ken Duken in the role of the homecomer - Senn staged a gripping psycho-drama based on the script by Christian Pfannenschmidt (" Marlene "," My Heart in Africa ")."

background

The film was first presented at the Munich Film Festival in 2008. The first broadcast in public television was already on September 3 in the first planned, but the German then stated the 5th November, 2008. However, this date was discarded as this evening would be dedicated to the presidential election in the United States . Because of this, October 23 was chosen as the alternative slot. However, this date collided with the soccer event UEFA Cup . “Welcome Home” was first broadcast on February 2, 2009.

At the same time as Welcome Home , another SWR editorial team developed another film that deals with the subject of a traumatized soldier returning from Afghanistan: Night Before Eyes was shown for the first time at the 2008 Berlinale and has won several awards. The actions of the two films differ only slightly, but Welcome Home paints a much more realistic picture of the Bundeswehr.

Trivia

There are some formal errors in relation to the Bundeswehr in the film. Among other things, in the Bundeswehr machine, at the beginning of the film, private soldiers return from the mission, which, taking into account the time spent abroad, training times and transport times, cannot happen. The Bundeswehr psychologist once wears the shoulder boards of a senior staff doctor and in another scene that of a lieutenant ( medical officer candidate ). The main actor, Corporal Winter, incorrectly signs off from his company commander in the third person, he says: "Herr Hauptmann, Hauptgefreiter Winter signs off" instead of correctly: "Herr Hauptmann. Corporal Winter, log me out. "
