history

St. Stephen's Church, monastery property

The municipality of Winningen was incorporated into the city of Aschersleben on March 1st, 2004 and lost its political independence.

Winningen is 190 to 200 m above sea level in the rain shadow of the Harz on federal highway 180 and has been a district of Aschersleben since 2004. The land value index for the surrounding arable land averages 80. The main crops are grain, potatoes and sugar beets. The area around Winningen has always been fertile land and was settled long before it was first mentioned in a document in 964. This is evidenced by excavations from 1989/90. In 1060 the Empress Agnes, the mother of Heinrich IV., Donated goods to Winningen to Archbishop Engelhard of Magdeburg. The first church was built around 1145. The first Winningen family of ancestral origin, gave up their property here in 1254 and took part in the eastern colonization under the Aschersleber Ascanians. In their coat of arms they had three sickles on a red background as a sign of their free rural origin.

Around 1280 the community belonged to the county of Aschersleben, which was ruled by the Anhalt people. In 1282 Count Otto I von Aschersleben sold the land of Winningen Castle, which he had demolished, to Michaelstein Monastery. Michaelstein Monastery acquired enormous possessions in and around Winningen through donations, purchases and exchanges. So in 1293 the Winningen Monastery was created , which has been the monastery’s most important external property ever since. It had a very eventful history. During the Peasants' War in 1525 - the week after Easter - the monastery courtyard was captured, robbed and partially destroyed. In the Thirty Years' War , the plague and ongoing looting caused the total destruction of the place. From 1643 Winningen was repopulated under Count Hans-Christoph von Königsmark. 20 years later, the land in Winningen was bought by Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Homburg. Under Westphalian rule (1807-1813), the estate and the village community were merged into a local authority. The manor district of Winningen was united on September 30, 1928 with the rural community of Winningen.

From 1823 to 1945 the squire family Braune had the estate on lease. While the village was largely spared from acts of war in the First and Second World Wars , they demanded their bloodshed from the Winnings, so 43 Winningers died from 1914 to 1918 and 69 were killed in the Second World War the material and the soldiers withdrew again. It is probably thanks to this fact that Winningen was taken by the Americans without major incidents. After the takeover by the British and their early departure, Winningen became part of the Soviet-occupied zone in July 1945. Land reform and the establishment of LPG and VEG shaped the development of the place up to 1990. During this time, more than 40 single and multi-family houses were built. In the 1980s the place had a shopping center, a doctor's office, a dentist's office, a library, a kindergarten, a BHG and a complex acceptance point for services. In 1988 a crèche, a fire station and the central water supply were built. From 1980 Winningen belonged to the community association "Hakel", to which the city of Cochstedt and the communities Schadeleben, Wilsleben, Neu-Königsaue and Friedrichsaue belonged. In 1993 Winningen was connected to the sewer system. From 1994 Winningen was part of the administrative community "Bördeblick" based in Hecklingen. In 2004 a contract was signed with the city of Aschersleben. It is thanks to this that today, with one exception, all local roads have undergone a fundamental upgrade. The new multi-purpose building for the rifle club and volunteer fire brigade would probably not have existed without this contract. However, the Winningers have been fighting against the increasing waterlogging in some parts of the place for some time. Older Winningers like to point out the condition (partially disappearance) of the old drainage ditches.
