Wisegirls (alternative title: Three Angels Against the Mafia ) is an American - British - Canadian thriller from 2002 . Directed by David Anspaugh and written by John Meadows .

action

Shy medical student Meg Kennedy dropped out and moved to Staten Island . She lives there with her grandmother and works as a waitress in a chic Italian restaurant. The manager of the restaurant is the unfriendly Italian-American Gio, who is very suspicious of Kennedy. Kennedy has some teething problems, but soon finds his way around. Kennedy quickly finds out that the customers include numerous Mafiosi who meet in the restaurant. She befriends her colleagues Raychel and Kate. Raychel has a big mouth and is extroverted, while Kate, like Meg Kennedy, is a bit shy. Kate tells her that there is hardly an Italian restaurant in New York that has nothing to do with the Mafia.

She happens to save the life of one of the Mafiosi, for which she is offered some privileges. She will get many compliments and tips in the near future. The young Mafioso Frankie Santalino makes her beautiful eyes, but respects her after she has reprimanded him.

After a long wedding party, Meg is busy cleaning up. The restaurant is as good as empty. Frank and Gio are still sitting at the counter. The heavily drunk Gio behaves contemptuously and extremely aggressively towards Meg. When he slaps her face, Frankie knocks him down and seriously injures him. The old Mafioso Santalino arrives and angrily kicks Gio in the head. Frankie ends Gio's agony with a pistol shot.

Meg is totally horrified. For the Santalinos, however, there is a problem: the corpse has to be disposed of. Frankie forces Meg at gunpoint to help him. Kennedy is forced to cut up Gio's body. She tells about it to Kate, who turns out to be a police officer undercover against the Mafia. Kate and her colleagues force Kennedy to continue working with a hidden microphone in the hope that the Mafia murders will be discussed in their presence. In return, Kennedy and her grandmother are promised to join the witness protection program .

Kennedy reappears at work and talks to Frankie. She tries to steer the conversation towards Gio's murder, but he does not respond. Instead, he tells her that he feels a lot for her. Then she speaks to old Santalino, who promises her that anyone who offends her will be killed. One look from Kate reveals the camouflage, Santalino tears the chain from her neck and discovers the microphone. Kate calls her colleagues and the police arrive. A shootout begins in which Frankie is killed. Kate is shot and seriously injured. Santalino wants to kill Kennedy who is taking care of her injured colleague. Raychel shoots him with the gun of one of the gangsters. Kennedy tries an emergency operation and is mistakenly shot by one of the police officers.

Some time later, Raychel visits Kennedy's grave. Raychel works in another restaurant as a manager. Kate visits her on her birthday, which she wants to celebrate with Raychel - which she refuses. She despises Kate as a liar and a snoop. Then the door opens and Kennedy appears. Her death was faked so she could go into hiding. Raychel is shocked and overjoyed and she also makes up with Kate. The three women celebrate together.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter magazine that the film owes a lot to leading actresses Mira Sorvino, Mariah Carey and Melora Walters.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film vacillated “indecisively between crime comedy and drama” . He works “just as much with Mafia myths as with their ironic questioning [...] without finding too convincing density” .
