Anthony James "Tony" Esposito (born April 23, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Canadian -American ice hockey goalkeeper, official and scout of Italian descent, who during his active career between 1968 and 1984 among other things Has played 985 games for the Canadiens de Montréal and Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL). Esposito, who won the Stanley Cup in 1969 in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal , was one of the best players in his position, particularly in the 1970s, and received numerous awards during this time. In 1988, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his achievements . His brother Phil was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
The Chicago Black Hawks paid $ 30,000 to the Canadiens de Montréal to sign a young goalkeeper. When he kept his box clean in 15 games at the end of the season, this young goalkeeper had become a real star. Only George Hainsworth had managed more shutouts in 1929. With his unorthodox way of playing, he was one of the best goalkeepers in the NHL. He perfected the "butterfly style" and represented Canada in the 1972 Summit Series . "Tony O" failed to win the Stanley Cup in his 15 years with the Hawks and can only look back on a cup win in 1969 as a substitute goalkeeper in Montréal. After accepting US citizenship , Esposito played for the USA selection for the Canada Cup in 1981 .
In 1988 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
