Magdeburg Science Harbor

The think tank

The Magdeburg Science Harbor is a modern city quarter in Magdeburg . It emerged from the former trading port , which over time lost its function as a transshipment point. The science port is a museum, science and research location. In the future, it is to be linked to trade, housing, services and, thanks to its location on the Elbe, also to leisure and tourism.

location

The science port is located on the area of the former trading port north of Magdeburg's city center in the Alte Neustadt district directly on the Elbe and around 700 meters east of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . On the opposite side of the Elbe is the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences , which can be reached via the north bridge of the adjacent B 1 .

The science port is the final stop of bus line 73. The nearest tram stops are Askanischer Platz, Universitätsbibliothek and Peter-Paul-Straße (all around 700 m away).

history

Due to the increasing growth of the Port of Hamburg , the need for storage and transshipment points also increased in the hinterland. As a result, the trading port was created in 1893 as part of the four Magdeburg ports . In the course of time, the port lost its function, as the commercial areas extend more to the north of the city towards A 2 and the other three ports. In order to give the port area new life and still maintain its character, it was decided to give the area a new use. Existing buildings were therefore refurbished and converted. During the construction of the think tank , which opened in 2007 , two existing granaries were demolished and rebuilt in the same cubature , linked together and converted into an office building for innovative companies and research institutions.

Some of the still existing cranes, excavators, an old lifting bridge and the Gustav Zeuner chain steamer in the harbor basin as a museum ship have been integrated into the area. In addition to the maintenance of old buildings and machines, the construction of new research facilities is also part of the conversion to a science port , such as the striking Elbe Office or the building of the Virtual Development and Training Center (VDTC) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) ).

Another example of linking several areas with one another is the planned expansion of the two large silos at the north-eastern end of the port to two high-rise apartment buildings with a total of 200 apartments. However, due to the mill opposite and stricter noise protection requirements, the expansion has been at a standstill for some time. According to the construction officer Ralf Born, a solution is being worked on together with the mill.

Science and research location

Together with the neighboring Otto von Guericke University and the nearby Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences , the Science Harbor forms the science and research center in Magdeburg. In 2005, the decision was made to center science and research facilities in the no longer used commercial port in order to continue to establish Magdeburg as an important scientific location.

For this purpose, existing facilities were linked with newly created facilities. The existing scientific institutions include the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF, the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and the "Experimental Factory" as a research and transfer center for application-oriented research . In 2006 the “Virtual Development and Training Center” VDTC of the nearby IFF was opened as a modern research center for virtual technologies with high-tech laboratories. With the construction of the “think tank”, offices were created for innovative companies and research institutions. The largest company there is the "Institute for Automation and Communication" (ifak), which deals with the process industry , environmental technology and sensor and measurement technology , among other things . In 2009 the "Elbe Office" was completed as an office and research building with modern technology and equipment. The University of Magdeburg has set up its “development laboratory and test field for positioning and communication in traffic and logistics” as part of the European Galileo project in a converted warehouse at the science port.

The area also forms the start and end point of the annual “Long Night of Science” with over 15,000 visitors.

Museum location

Due to the goal of preserving the buildings and machines that still existed from the former port and thereby establishing the Science Harbor as a museum location, the site still offers a large number of technical monuments and historical buildings, which are shown via the Magdeburg Museum of Technology . These include the machine house, the “Elefant” heavy-duty crane, the diving shaft II , a bucket-chain floating excavator as well as the lifting bridge and the historical railway exhibition of the Magdeburg Railway Friends Association. The full gantry luffing crane built in 1956 is also located in the port . In addition, the last chain steamer of its kind, the Gustav Zeuner , is installed on the listed lift bridge and, as a museum ship, bears witness to the developments of the designers Ewald Bellingrath ( grab wheel for the chain) and Gustav Anton Zeuner (turbine propeller for the descent without chain) . In the immediate vicinity of the port is the Alte Neustadt locomotive shed , which was built in 1863 and at times belonged to the Magdeburg port railway .

Culture and art

The site always offers space for events. In addition to the “Long Night of Science”, this includes the International Puppet Theater Festival 2011, the “Summer Air Festival” in summer 2014, the art exhibition Opus Aquanett in summer 2017 and regular harbor concerts by the Rühmann Band .
