Wolf-Dieter Hepach

Wolf-Dieter Hepach (born September 24, 1939 in Blaustein ; † August 18, 2018 in Ingolstadt ) was a German historian and educator . As a city historian of Ulm , he wrote several non-fiction books and illustrated books .

Life

Wolf-Dieter Hepach was born as the son of a teacher on September 24, 1939 in Ulm and grew up in nearby Klingenstein , now part of the town of Blaustein. His childhood years were overshadowed by the Second World War . He attended the Kepler high school in Ulm and graduated from high school there in 1959. After studying history, philosophy and English in Munich and Bristol , he was in 1973 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Dr. phil. PhD.

With a doctorate in history, he worked as a teacher at the girls ' grammar school in Ulm (today Hans and Sophie Scholl grammar school ) from 1967 to 1982 . He spent most of his professional life at his old school, the Kepler Gymnasium, of which he became the principal . In addition, Hepach was the managing director of the Ulm high schools. After 22 years, he retired in 2004 as the longest-serving school principal in the high school district.

Hepach was socially engaged in Ulm in a variety of ways. From 1990 he headed the Ulm Museum Society for twenty-four years and was its honorary chairman. As a historian, he was the author of publications on the history of the city of Ulm and the Alb-Donau district , including several company stories . His history of Ulm University , published in 2007 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, earned him the University Medal of Honor in 2010. In 2008, Hepach was awarded the home medal of the state of Baden-Württemberg . In 2013, the city of Ulm awarded him its citizen medal.

Because of health problems, when he was old, Hepach and his wife moved to Ingolstadt near their children. He died there on August 18, 2018, a few weeks before he would turn 79. In Ulm Cathedral a public memorial service for him was held on 28 August 2018th

Wolf-Dieter Hepach was married to Kristin Hepach. He has two sons and a daughter.
