Wolfgang Weitbrecht (born June 17, 1920 in Stuttgart , † November 28, 1987 in Berlin ) was a German doctor and writer of science fiction novels.

Life

After studying medicine at the University of Tübingen , Weitbrecht began his military service and received his doctorate in 1947 as a specialist in social hygiene . Two years earlier he became a member of the KPD . From 1947 to 1953 Weitbrecht worked first as an assistant doctor and until 1955 as a medical officer in Berlin-Köpenick . He then worked as a deputy district doctor in East Berlin until 1957. Then Weitbrecht was first vice-president of the German Red Cross of the GDR until 1974 and was also a member of the district assembly in Dresden from 1958 to 1963 . From 1974 until his retirement in 1985 as senior medical adviser and in the meantime honored in 1980 as “ Honored Doctor of the People ” with the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze, Weitbrecht was editor-in-chief of the medical journal humanitas . He was also a freelance writer and science fiction writer , who had also been a member of the GDR Writers' Association since 1974 .

His first novel Oracle of the Dolphins was very successful and was reprinted several times in different editions (also as a novel ). In the "scientific-fantastic novel" (subtitle) his protagonists come to the realization through research that extraterrestrials visited the earth in prehistoric times and left their traces. Initially it is only the dwarfs who are identified as aliens by Weitbrecht's protagonists , in the sequels Hour of Ceres , Star of the Mothers and Confusion about Gäa , other mythical creatures are also included.

In the early GDR-SF there were quite a number of such influences of pre-astronautics . Compare Günther Krupkat , Carlos Rasch and Rainer Fuhrmann . In Weitbrecht the fairytale element dominates.
