The Roman newspaper was a monthly series of magazines published by Volk und Welt ( GDR ).
It was published in 1949 by the T Tages Rundschau publishing house and was initially intended to serve exclusively to popularize Soviet literature. In mid-1952 (from issue 36) the Roman newspaper was taken over by the Volk und Welt publishing house ; the spectrum was expanded to include authors from other literatures.
Up to 1990 487 issues and some special issues were published. The booklets ranged from 100 to over 200 pages. Novels in various directions, most of which had also been published in bound form, were presented, for example classics , contemporary literature , crime novels , satire and science fiction ; works by Goethe , Dostojewski , Patrick Süskind and Stanisław Lem have been published.
At times it had a slightly longer format than A5 , later DIN A5 format, a thin cardboard envelope and an adhesive binding . With the two-column sentence it is more reminiscent of a booklet than a newspaper. Ingrid Schuppan and Günter Wongel were responsible for the cover drawing of the first numbers , the others came from Klaus Müller , from the 400 numbers they came from Angelika Rößler .
On the last page there was a picture of the author and his short biography. On the back was a sample of the next issue. The Roman newspaper cost 80 pfennigs and was not sold in bookstores but at newspaper kiosks. It was a particularly inexpensive method of producing large numbers of reprints of coveted titles with little effort. However, original editions and first translations also appeared here and there. Overall, the "Roman newspaper" reached a circulation of more than 45.5 million copies at a price of 80 pfennigs.
format
Beginnings (publishing house daily review )
Issues No. 1 to 35: Large format (22 cm × 30 cm), price 60 Pf.
Beginnings ( Volk und Welt publishing house )
Issues No. 36 to 174: Small format (15 cm × 22 cm). At the upper edge is a horizontal area, sometimes black or yellow, sometimes with the color of the background, the title, the price of 80 pfennigs and month-year (from 1956). The author and title of the work can be found on the cover picture or on a black stripe at the bottom.
Modern look, offset head
Issues No. 175 to 208: In the upper part is the title Roman-Zeitung, to the right of it the number and under this the price of 80 Pf .
More modern look
Issues No. 209 to 340: The title of the work and the name of the author are also listed in the separate, upper part. In 1971 and 1972 fewer than 12 issues were published, so that during this period it is not possible to clearly assign the number in the year (column month-year) to the month of publication.
Changed more modern look
Issues No. 341 to 487: Slight change: The issue title on the left-hand side and the title of the work, the author, as well as below the number and the price of 80 Pf from now on is on the upper white margin noted on the right.
