The Wolfbach is a brook in the city of Zurich that used to flow through the old town and into the Limmat .

geography

course

The Wolfbach rises on the Adlisberg, east of the city center . The source is located a little northwest of the Dolder artificial ice rink on Hottingerbergstrasse. It flows openly through the Wolfbachtobel, which is also called Doldertal . Here he picks up the Grütholzbächli from the right , which drains areas north of the ice rink. At the Bungertweg the Wolfbach flows into the sewer system. Today, the constantly accumulating, clean stream water from the Wolfbach from the Bungertweg level is channeled in a separate rain sewer together with the water from the Klosbach over the Carmen, Klosbach, Klein, Mühlebach and Falkenstrasse into Lake Zurich . The discharge point of the canal into Lake Zurich is in the extension of Falkenstrasse.

The Wolfbach is the namesake for Wolfbachstrasse, the Wolfbach journeyman's house and the Wolfbach schoolhouse, which the brook has not flowed past since it was discharged into the rain sewer.

history

The Wolfbach in the area of the Barfüsserkloster

In 1860 the Wolfbach still flowed over large stretches as an open brook along today's Dolder, Hottinger and Wolfbachstrasse through Hottingen in the direction of what will later become Heimplatz , where it crossed the area of the Barfüsserkloster . Then it flowed via Rehgässlein and Synagogengasse through the right bank of the old town, where it flowed into the Limmat at the Rudolf-Brun-Bridge . In 1870 it was covered in the lower and middle area, and in 1895 also in the area of the mountain road. This former stream course, the Wolfbach Canal, still exists today and is one of the oldest canals in the city. Since the Wolfbach was diverted to Lake Zurich, it has been leading sewage and mixed water to the sewage treatment plant. It is only fed with stream water when there is high water.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Wolfbach fed the Wolfbach basin on the site of the old canton school (today's Zurich University of Education ); this served as an equalization and clarification basin as well as for extinguishing purposes and as an ice rink until it had to give way to the second gym in 1882. Instead of this older basin, a newer retention basin existed below the Bergstrasse around 1900.

As part of a renaturation project, the course of the stream between Bergstrasse and Bungertweg was restored in 1990.
