Wolfgang Freitag (* 1930 in Kolberg , Pomerania , part of Poland since 1945) is a German architect who specialized in children's and youth facilities during his active time.

Live and act

After graduation in 1949 Wolfgang Freitag began in 1951 at the Technical University of Berlin , a study of architecture and was parallel to the masons trained. An internship in Finland paved the way for later opportunities in this country. In 1957 he obtained his diploma from Willy Kreuer . From 1957 to 1958 he worked in the Kirsten & Nather office in Berlin. From 1958 to 1962 he assisted Wolf Sand at the chair for building construction at the TU Berlin. From 1962 to 1964 he worked in the Helsinki office of Aarne Ervi. Among other things, he was involved in the competition entry for the city center of Lohja , as well as in the contracts for the swimming pools in Espoo - Tapiola and Kemi and a commercial building in Helsinki. During his subsequent activity in the Hans Scharoun office in Berlin from 1965 to 1968, he was among other things on the orders for an institute building of the TU, the residential area "Rauhe Kapf" in Böblingen , the (after completion so named) Scharoun Theater Wolfsburg and the Johanneskirche of the Christian community on the street Am Glockengarten in Bochum-Altenbochum , Scharoun's only sacred building .

Gropiusstadt community center

In 1969 he took over the management of Anatol Ginelli's Berlin office. One of the projects developed there is the Lipschitzallee community center in Berlin-Neukölln . His next position was from 1973 to 1974 at the Krusnik & Reith office (later known for the fountain on Breitscheidplatz ), where he worked as a freelancer, for example at the Schillerstraße educational center in Berlin-Charlottenburg . In 1975 he also worked as a freelancer for Bodo Fleischer and his town hall project in Pforzheim . For the period from 1976 to 1978 he returned to Krusnik & Reith to plan , among other things, an upper school center in Berlin-Kreuzberg . From 1978 to 1980 he worked in the Ruth Golan office . He was awarded three educational institution projects: a vocational school in Wilhelmshaven , an upper school center in Berlin-Britz and the expansion of the University of Osnabrück . His main task as an employee in the Dietrich von Beulwitz office, to which he belonged from 1980 to 1990, was the construction of single and multi-family houses as well as shops in Berlin. On the side, since 1958, he was a freelancer in the Edgar Wisniewski office , where, among other things, he carried out the implementation planning for the Berlin Chamber Music Hall.

In 1990 he founded his own office with Gerhard Stössner and Thomas Fischer (extension wing of the Axel Springer high-rise , 1992–1994), but in 1991 he teamed up with Christian Hartmann (* 1956, Erfurt) and Reiner Sinz (* 1954, Essen) . Right at the beginning of the new office community, the first drafts in a school building competition in Berlin-Charlottenburg resulted in a major order. The jury praised: "This concept represents a social and cultural utopia, because the structures of the site are retained as something that can be used positively." The school complex, which began as a primary school and developed over the years, follows the revised plans of the three architects (with a triple sports hall ) has been called the Peter Ustinov Community School since 2005. According to drafts of the office, three day-care centers were built in the Rudower Feldern from 1995 to 1997 and the block-type thermal power station there from 1994 to 1996 , with the block-type thermal power station and the neighboring day-care center corresponding in shape and material.

Wolfgang Freitag left the company on December 31, 1999. Converted into a GmbH in 2017 , the company continues to operate under the name "Freitag Hartmann Architects".

Wolfgang Freitag should not be confused with the person responsible for planning and executing the physically handicapped school “Dr. Georg Benjamin ”(after 1990 Carl von Linné School for the physically handicapped and learning disabled) in Berlin-Lichtenberg in 1979 with the order“ Banner of Labor ”awarded to Wolfgang Freitag.
