Silvio Antoniani (born December 31, 1540 in Rome ; † August 16, 1603 there ) was a musician, church lawyer, educational author, priest and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, who spent most of his career in the Roman Curia .

biography

As the son of a poor wool merchant, his talent with the lyre drew the attention of many patrons from an early age and indirectly led to his career in the church.

Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Waldburg financed his training at a young age. Pope Julius III Antoniani provided board and lodging in the Apostolic Palace . He met Ercole II. D'Este , Duke of Ferrara, who promoted his studies at the University of Ferrara , where Antoniani received his doctorate in civil and canon law in 1556 and was professor of classical literature .

After the death of the Duke of Ferrara he returned to Rome. Pope Pius IV appointed him to the chair of Belles Lettres at La Sapienza University in 1563 , a position where he collaborated with Charles Borromeo , who made him his personal secretary. In 1566 he resigned the chair, began studying theology under the direction of St. Philip Neri and was ordained a priest on June 12, 1568.

Pope Pius V appointed him secretary to the college of cardinals , an office which he held for 24 years. Pope Sixtus V appointed him secretary of the Congregation of Bishops and Religious. Clement VIII appointed him secretary of the papal writings in 1593. Antoniano was also Master of the Papal Chamber and Canon of St. Peter's Basilica .

Pope Clement appointed him cardinal priest of San Salvatore in Lauro on March 3, 1599 . He was present at the adoption of the Union of Brest and two of his writings are engraved on the north and south sides of the base of the Vatican Obelisk in St. Peter's Square . He died in Rome in 1603 and is buried in Santa Maria in Vallicella .

Work

With the rise of Renaissance humanism in the late 16th century, Antoniano devoted himself to the study of educational problems and, at the suggestion of St. Charles Borromeo, wrote his main work on the Christian education of children (Tre libri dell 'educazione cristiana de' figliuoli, Verona, 1584) . His work was published in several editions in Italian and translated into French (Troyes, 1856; Paris, 1873) by Guignard and into German (Freiburg, 1888) by Kunz. The other writings of Antoniano, many of which were not published, deal with literary, historical, and liturgical subjects.

He was one of the authors of the Roman catechism and a member of the commission commissioned by Clement VIII to review the breviary .

Antoniano was one of five scholars to whom Torquato Tasso submitted his work Gerusalemme liberata in 1575 .
