Wolfgang Lechner (born June 28, 1953 in Schwaz , Tyrol ; pseudonym: Rafi Reiser ) is an Austrian journalist .

Life

Lechner studied German and comparative literature in Innsbruck, Vienna and at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1977 from the University of Innsbruck on the mechanisms of literary reception in Austria using the example of Ödön von Horváths .

Since 1978 he has been editor , since 1984 chief editor of the magazine Eltern in Munich and in 1985 he became editor-in-chief of the Catholic youth magazine Junge Zeit in Augsburg. After conflicts with the paper's financiers, the Bavarian bishops, he moved to Hamburg in 1989 and became editor of the Zeitmagazin of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . For Zeitmagazin, from 1999 to 2007 also for the Zeit department “Life”, he reported from Israel , Palestine , Egypt , Tunisia , Rwanda , Burundi , from the rebel area in Eastern Congo, from Oman , Lebanon , from Syria , India , Nepal , Thailand , Vietnam , the USA , from Cuba , Antigua , Grenada , Brazil , Chile and Argentina , as well as from most European countries.

In 1992 he won the Catholic Journalism Prize of the German Bishops' Conference for a report about the Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem .

In the editorial team of Zeitmagazin, Lechner was responsible for the puzzle pages ("Games") and for Wolfram Siebeck's column for many years . He initiated the Zeit Scrabble tournament, which has been held annually since 2000 , the most traditional scrabble tournament in the German language, and from 2000 to 2013 he was in charge of the Zeit cooking competition for amateur cooks.

From April 2010 to October 2015 Lechner was head of department for the page “ZEIT der readers”, from November 2015 to November 2018 he worked for ZEIT as head of duty, was then a reporter and has been the author of the paper since August 1, 2019.
