Wolfgang Steinböck (* 1650 in Eggenburg , Lower Austria ; † February 1, 1708 ibid) was an Austrian master stonemason and baroque sculptor .

Life

Wolfgang was the first son of the Eggenburg master stonemason Thomas Steinböck (* 1625), mother: Catharina. Over the years he got the brothers Veith and Andreas , the sisters Martha, Barbara and Christina.

Wolfgang learned the trade from his father, his acquittal as journeyman and brother took place on September 27, 1671, he became a master stonemason and took over public functions as councilor , from 1699 to 1701 city ​​judge , from 1703 to 1707 mayor in Eggenburg.

According to the guild book , ten stonemason boys learned the craft from him by 1705 . Two examples, the boy Johann Georg Haresleben from Kühnring near Eggenburg was arrested by master Wolfgang Steinböck, and on October 16, 1689 he was acquitted. Wolfgang Steinböck was the owner of house no. 4 on Eggenburg's main square, a patrician house with a richly designed house portal. The lintel of the window above the gate bears his stonemason's mark and his monogram WSP. His coat of arms can also be seen on Kremserstrasse 6 in the keystone of the basket arch portal .

Eva Regina survived her husband by 26 years and died at the age of 94 in 1734. They had seven children, their son Jacob also learned to be a stonemason.

The epitaph in the Eggenburg church is a large tomb made of sandstone and red marble . The gilded writing on the marble slab proclaims (in extracts):

His widow Eva Regina had the tomb erected in his memory and a new Corpus Christi altar in 1716 . She donated the "Christ statue with the flag" on the east side of the bell tower, the year 1712 and the statue of the "painful Mother of God" on Calvary from 1715.
