Wolf lilacs ( Syringa wolfii ) is a shrub with purple to pale purple flowers from the family of Olive Family (Oleaceae). The natural range is in China, Korea and in eastern Russia. The species is sometimes used as an ornamental shrub.

description

Wolf's lilac is an up to 6 meters high, upright shrub with bare or hairy, sparsely covered with cork pores , young green and later gray branches. Terminal buds are present. The leaves have a 1 to 3 centimeter long, bare or hairy stem. The leaf blade is simple, 3.5 to 12, rarely up to 18 centimeters long and 1.5 to 7, rarely up to 10 centimeters wide, elliptical-elongated, elliptical to obovate-elongated, with mostly pointed to pointed tip and wedge-shaped or more or less rounded base. The upper side of the leaf is deep green, glabrous or sparsely hairy, the underside is light gray-green and shaggy hairy.

The flowers grow in upright, terminal, leafy panicles 5 to 30 centimeters long and 3 to 18 centimeters in diameter . The inflorescence axis is downy or hairy shaggy. The 0 to 2 millimeter long peduncle is like the 2 to 3.5 millimeter long calyx also downy or shaggy hairy. The corolla is 1.2 to 1.8 inches wide and pale purple to crimson. The corolla tube is funnel-shaped and 1 to 1.4 inches long. The corolla lobes are oblong-ovate to ovate, upright or spread out. The anthers are yellow and reach just below the throat of the corolla tube. The flowers are fragrant. As fruits , 1.2 to 1.7 centimeters long, oblong and smooth capsules are formed. Wolf's lilacs bloom in June, the fruits ripen in August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

distribution

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces of Heilongjiang , Jilin and Liaoning , in Korea and in eastern Russia. Wolf's lilac grows in mixed forests, thickets and along rivers at altitudes of 500 to 1600 meters on moderately dry to moist, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, sandy or gravelly-loamy soils in sunny locations. The species loves warmth and is usually frost hardy .

Systematics

Wolfs Lilac ( Syringa wolfii ) is a kind of the genus of Lilac ( Syringa ) in the family of Oleaceae (Oleaceae). There the genus is assigned to the tribe Oleeae. The species was first scientifically described by Martin Vahl in 1804 . The genus name Syringa was chosen by Linnaeus in 1753, previously from around the 16th century the name was used both for the common lilac ( Syringa vulgaris ) and for the European pipe bush ( Philadelphus coronarius ). It was probably derived from the Greek "syrigs", a wind instrument that can be made from the branches of the pipe bush.
