The Wollspinnersberg in Wuppertal is 273 meters above sea level, the highest point in the Barmer Nordpark .

Location and origin of name

The Wollspinnersberg belongs to the Hardt - Stübchensberg -Nordpark mountain range, which runs from southwest to northeast . It is located between the Wupper valley and the actual Barmer Heights, which reach 300 meters on Hatzfeld .

As the highest peak, the Wollspinnersberg is surrounded from the north in a clockwise direction by the local locations and elevations: Hatzfeld , Mallack , Wichlinghausen , Wichelhausberg , Sedansberg , Rott , Gelber Sprung and Riescheid .

The origin of the name is not certain, it may be due to sheep breeding or early textile processing.

geology

Geologically interesting stratified rock can be found in the entire Nordpark, but especially on the partly steep flanks of the Wollspinnersberg. There is a deep L-shaped gorge in the game reserve laid out and maintained by the Nordstädter Bürgererverein eV (NBV), through which the stream on Zietenstrasse flows south. The forest consists exclusively of deciduous trees, mainly beech species. The entire area has been heavily thinned in recent years and this has resulted in some ridge clearings.

nature

In the larger area of the Wollspinnersberg, which encompasses the entire North Park, there are well-tended walking paths and in the western part there is a dog free-running zone. East of the Wollspinnersberg there is a magnificent view over the valley of the Wupper with a view towards Heckinghausen and Oberbarmen up to the Ehrenberg . In a sunny location, flower terraces with seasonal vegetation have been created.

Facilities and transport

In addition to the Nordpark, there are cemeteries, the Protestant Johanneum , a special needs school, elementary schools, sports fields, an old people's home and open and closed residential areas in the adjacent districts .

To the west of the tower terrace restaurant there is a high transmission mast that also functions as a television converter for ZDF and WDR , among other things . In 2003 the mast was renewed and reinforced.

The Wollspinnersberg is accessible by the WSW bus routes 612, 622, 628, 632 and 644. There is a parking lot for cars to the northeast of the excursion restaurant. The originally northwestern area in the direction of Hatzfeld was trimmed from 1966 when the B 326 (later A 201 / A 46 ) was built and the Leimbach flowing there was partially piped. In 1991 a noise barrier was built along the motorway.

Johannes Rau

As a prominent resident, former Federal President Johannes Rau († 2006) grew up on the edge of the Wollspinnersberg and also attended the Riescheider kindergarten there. To reopen this house after several months of renovation, he came back here in 1993 in memory of the roots of his childhood.
