Volodymyr Hryhorowytsch Serhjejew (* February 20 . Jul / 5. March  1914 greg. In Moscow , Russian Empire ; † 29. April 2009 in Kharkiv , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet engineer and chief designer of strategic control systems for intercontinental and launchers .

Life

Serhjejew grew up in the Moscow district of Samoskvorechye . In 1935 he began studying at the Podbelski Institute . In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army and took part in the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland . He then continued his studies, graduated in June 1940 and then worked for a year as an electrical engineer in Bologoje and Riga . After the beginning of the German-Soviet War , he served again in the Red Army from June 23, 1941 to May 17, 1947 and was awarded several orders and medals. His younger brother died near Smolensk in 1942 . In 1946 he married and had two sons.

From June 1947 he worked in the research institute NII-885 , where under the direction of Nikolai A. Piljugin control systems for the rockets R-1 , R-2 , R-5 , R-7 / 7A , R-9 , R-12 and R-14 were developed. Serhjejew worked his way up from research assistant to head of laboratory.

In November 1960 Serhjejew became the chief designer of the design office OKB-692 appointed in Kharkov, in the intercontinental ballistic missile R-16 was developed. His predecessor Boris Konopljew was killed in the Nedelin disaster on October 24, 1960 when a ready - to-go R-16 exploded on the ramp. In 1969, Serhjejew created the control system for the UR-100N from Vladimir N. Chelomei , a competitor of Mikhail K. Jangel , which led to a conflict between Serhjejew and Jangel.

Under Serhjejew the control system of the R-16 was revised and later that of the R-36 and the UR-100N designed. Since April 1982 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR .

In the 1980s Serhjejew worked on the control systems of the Energija rocket, which was supposed to transport the Soviet space shuttle Buran into space . The Energija was only used twice. In addition, Serhjejew worked on control systems for various space projects, including the Salyut space stations and the Mir space station .

Under the direction of Serhjejew, OKB-692 was renamed NPO Elektropribor in April 1978 . Serhjejew gave up the leadership in October 1986. Minister of Mechanical Engineering Baklanov officially announced that Serhjeev had submitted his resignation, but it was clear to the staff that this was an intrigue that had been orchestrated by Valentin Glushko , the head of NPO Energija , and Anatoly Andrushchenko . In addition, Serhjeev showed no respect for Gorbachev's new government and its political course and often ignored ministerial instructions , so that Gorbachev was satisfied with the resignation of Serhjeev. Serhjejew was demoted to research assistant and Andrushchenko was appointed as his successor. He retired in January 1991, but worked from July 1991 to December 2001 in various functions for Elektropribor and the successor company Hartron .
